"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 28, 1998 - 3 Assailant grabbed customer Port variety store |: Is robbed again For the second time this year a Water St. variety store was the target of thieves as the Port Stop Variety was robbed last week. Durham Regional Police report that some cash and a large 'quantity of scratch and win lottery tickets were taken during a robbery at approximate- ly 9:45 p.m. last Wednesday (July 22). A' 21-year-old Peterborough man was working behind the counter serving a 33-year- old Little Britain woman when a white man entered the store and walked up behind the female, grab- bing her by the neck. The man told the cashier to hand over the money, but he did not respond because he thought the man and woman knew each other and were joking around, said police. The man once again ordered the cashier to give him the money, which he did. The thief had a club in his left haftd, and said that he had a gun, say police. He ordered the woman obhing ev<r 4 20° behind the counter, told them not to call anyone, stuffed the money down the back of his shirt and fled on foot north on Water St. with a handful of lot- tery tickets. Witnesses report the suspect being a white man, about 5'10" with a medium build and long, dark brown fizzy hair, which could possibly be a wig. He was also wearing a pair of cheap sunglasses with large lenses, a light blue jean jacket and a blue shirt. The man was clean shaven. During the robbery the man stole a number of $1 lottery tickets including Casino Slots, Hot Cash, Mega Money and Instant Millions. Also taken were a number of $3 tickets including Bonus Bingo, Monopoly, Instant Keno, and Battleship. There have been 21 con- venience store robberies in Durham Region since the beginning of the year, police say. Last week's robbery was only the sec- ond one of 1998; the first one coming at the same variety store on January 29.
