McClelland Editorial Comment Police, CAS pact good news The agreement signed last week by offi- cials with Durham Regional Police and the Childrens Aid Society (CAS) comes as wel- .COme news. It may not seem ground-breaking -- essentially, it allows officers quicker access to CAS records when they investigate suspected cases of abuse involving children -- but it's another step along the way toward making the system more responsive and effective in protecting kids. Childrens' agencies here and across the province have come under intense scrutiny recently, as tough questions are asked about tragedies involving children who should have received our attention and pro- tection, but for some reason did not. And died. And that's only right. When the system is perceived to have failed -- no matter how many successes go unheralded -- it should be subjected to investigation and criticism, with a view to eliminating the impediments to service. The police will continue to be confronted with cases in which abuse is alleged, and it only makes sense that their efforts be facili- tated by disclosure of pertinent information. We have seen an intense clamp down on violence toward spouses. This is the next logical step in making sure the vulnerable among us get the protection they deserve. SHOT ME LAD! OY ANGUS! To the Editor: As a former son of Durham and now a proud-to-be Canadian living in Quebec City, I would like to thank the organizers of the Highland Games of Durham for a truly exceptional event. I attended all three days and, thanks to the understanding and competence of some organizers (whose names, I regret to say, I did not get) I was able to take my mother, in her wheelchair, to the Sunday competition for Highland dancing. i % i 2 § - i x i How often would the busy organizers of such an event find the time to come and ask whether things had gone as expected and were we pleased with the treatment we received? Well, that's what happened Sunday. Special thanks to the guys selling the Highland Games sweaters. I hope Stu gets his bandshell.
