"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 5, 1998 - 17 No zebra mussels in Lake Scugog yet, says KFA president By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Lake Scugog continues to be the only large body of water in the area that remains free of zebra mussels, says a local conservationist. Sandy Beaton, president of the Scugog Kawartha Fisheries Association (KFA) group, said the lake is pretty much the only lake around that has not been infect- ed by the pesky mussels. "None have been detected in Lake Scugog as of yet, and we're still monitoring the area for them," he said recently. "They are virtually spread throughout the Kawartha waterways, but water here in Scugog runs out, not in, which has probably delayed their arrival by a bit... but I suspect we will get them sometime." There are over a dozen monitoring stations set up around Lake Scugog to look out for the mussels, which are approx- imately the size of a thumbnail. They seek shaded areas, and attach themselves to hard surfaces, including boat hulls. "Boaters travelling from one lake to another need to be very careful," said Mr. Beaton, suggesting that a boat be removed from the water and allowed to dry in the sun -- which kills the mussels -- for two days, or that the hull be scrubbed "very, very well" to remove them. It's also a good idea for boaters to dump their livewells before leaving the lake. "You should never, ever dump water from one lake to another, never," said Mr. Beaton. "Theoretically we could postpone their (mussels) arrival in our lake indefi- nitely, but only if every boater was diligent at keeping their boat clean and dumping their livewells." He said, however, that it's unlikely Scugog will avoid contamination forever: "At some point some unthinking person 1s going to bring their unwashed boat "here or dump their livewell, and then there'll be major hassles." Once in a lake, the mussels are there to stay, clogging intake pipes and dis- rupting a delicate underwater environ- ment. "They love to pile on top of water intake pipes; they cover them like coral... piling one on top of each other until they clog it. They are definitely not nice things to have in your lake." In the early stages of their arrival, zebra mussels are free-floating and cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can come in groups of more than 30,000, and colonize quickly. Local lakes known to be infested include Rice, Stoney, Sturgeon, Buckhorn, Simcoe and Pigeon. Anniversary celebration Marion and Ralph Lee of Port Perry were sur- rounded by family and friends when they held a reception to mark their 50th wedding anniver- sary recently at Trillium Trails in Raglan. Best wishes included an honor for Mrs. Lee from the Port Perry Rotary Club, in recognition of her tireless volunteer work in the community. The land upon which Trillium Trails is situat- ed was once Mrs. Lee's family farm.
