Bank robber McArthur could be imprisoned indefinitely Dangerous offender hearing okayed By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Mitchiel "Micky" McArthur was back in a Whitby courtroom for a brief appearance last Friday afternoon as part of the lengthy process to have him declared a dangerous offender. The convicted bank robber spent about 10 minutes in the courtroom and heard Justice Harry LaForme put the case over to assignment court Sept. 3, when a date will be set to start the dangerous offender hearing. It could last as long as three weeks. The provincial justice department has "REMOTE % = FIREPLACES <4 GD-17 DV Zero Clearance od Co 1211] 5 pl 9 INSTALLED CLEPR approved the Crown's application to have McArthur declared a dangerous offender. If Judge LaForme rules in favor of the application, McArthur could spend the remainder of his life in prison. Dangerous offenders, like the notorious Clifford Olsen, have their cases automatically reviewed every three years, but the chance of parole is considered extremely dim. McArthur, now 44, was found guilty a year ago April 3 on 17 charges stemming from the bloody Bank of Montreal robbery and shootings in Port Perry the evening of Oct. 20, 1994 in which five people were There's Never Been A Better Time To Buy! wounded by gunfire and $50,000 stolen from the branch at the Highway 7A plaza. They include armed robbery, attempted murder and kidnapping. His younger half-brother, Angus, 31 at the time, was found not guilty of the same charges after a lengthy trial in front of the same jury. They were both arrested in Kingston the morning after the robbery and shootings by Durham, Kingston and OPP officers. As was the case throughout his trial, security was heavy when McArthur appeared in court last Friday afternoon.
