And what an inspiration the bonus payoffs proved to e. The MacTools/Bob's Towing ThunderCar series 1s generally considered to be a beginner's division, but the 20 drivers that took to the track showed talent beyond that level as the 30 lap feature was run free of caution periods. Moving up from his 17th place starting position, the Motor City's Larry MacKenzie assumed the lead of the feature run on the seventh lap and pow- ered on to the checkered flag with an amazing half- lap margin of victory. Fred Travis crossed the line a distant second with Les Stanley and Joe Anderson finishing nose to tail for third and fourth places, respectively. Post race inspection revealed that MacKenzie's Camaro as well as the cars of Doug and Dave Wells were equipped with alu- 'minum radiators, a feature not allowed by the Mosport rule book. The cars were declared illegal and dis- qualified for the evening and as a result Fred Travis was awarded the victory, his third in as many weeks. Stanley, Anderson, Dave Crowther and Donevan Price rounded out the top five. After the disqualifica- tions, heat wins were awarded to Anderson, Stanley, Roy Martel and Ken Perrier. Steven Knab in his #90 Chevy race truck extended his lead in the TJT Racing/Terry Culwick Auto Street Stock championship as he dominated his two heat races and earned the checkers in the 30 lap fea- ture. Pefferlaw's Craig Chen Jumped into the early lead but a freight train consist- ing of Andy Warbutton, Jim Rossiter, Duke Paul and Knab quickly formed and began the pursuit of the rapidly disappearing Chen. By the 20th circuit, the pack had closed the gap and Rossiter was able to assume the lead one lap later. Slower traffic became a fac- tor and on lap 24, Knab was able to pass the Oshawa driver coming out of turn two to take a lead that he never relinquished. Rossiter held on for second place fol- lowed by Bob Kish, Chen and Warbutton, all running bumper to bumper. While the first two fea- ture races were run yellow free, the Late Model event was another story. The 35 lap dash was slowed to a stagger as the caution flag flew six times and when the checkers mercifully fell, there was a familiar face in the winner's circle. Surviving the melee and earning the overall win was the dominating West Lee Talons. Moving into top spot on lap 10, Talons took the victory ahead of Ian Bourque, Rod Sauder (who recovered from a pit stop to replace a flat tire), Joe Mallette and Derek Henderson. Port Perry's Grant Edwards ran a superb race and had crossed the line in third place, but his engine was found to be illegal, hav Turn to Page 23 Last week our Port Perry Bantams hosted Lindsay's best. In game one the home team was able to hold off the Lindsay runners with the help of Jeremy Stephenson's fly ball catch and Donny Sherriffs solid throws to Greg Hunter on first. A great double by Ryan Appleton and a smooth single by Scott Evans as well as a crucial single by Nathan Cook kept Lindsay on their toes. Final score 13-6 in Lindsay's favor. The second game had some outstanding plays by the Port Perry boys. A Pineridge Bantams split Lindsay doubleheader nice fly ball catch by Caine Van Asten in left field to make the third out in the first. A nice throw from Mike Thompson to Greg to tag the first runner of the second inning. Steady pitching by Jamie Smith in the third and Adam Love's solid catch in right field gave our boys the opportunity to show their stuff at bat. A clever bunt by Joey Sanchez just inside the foul line found him on first and Gabriel Benshop repeated this action to advance Joey and put Turn to Page 23 3 E E i JEFF MITCHELL / PORT PERRY STAR FLYIN' HIGH: Hundreds of motocross enthusiasts came out to Elgin Park in Uxbridge Monday (Aug. 3) for the fifth annual CycleFair which featured some of the best riders in the province.
