From Corner Five They'll be waving the green flag for the world's fastest cars at Mosport this weekend By John "Wally" Nesbitt Special to The Star Festival Days are coming! No, not those Festival Days, they were weeks ago, but Mosport Festival Days. On Aug. 7, 8 and 9, historic Mosport Park will celebrate its most ambitious race weekend of the year as the new track owners provide Canada with its only chance to see the most sophisticated, fastest sports cars in the world. The headlining event will feature the World Sports Cars with the million dollar Ferrari 333SPs leading the pack. Full blooded racing Porsches, BMWs and Mustangs round out the field in the GT 1, 2 and 3 categories. The Speeddivision Cup cars will be there as well as the ultra-competitive Toyota Sports Racers. Mix in a round of the Canadian Formula Ford championship, the Champ Car Lights (recently seen at Mosport Speedway) and a three hour enduro for the Motorolo Cup and you've got yourself the best bang for your Canuck Buck anywhere. The Motorola Cup has been gaining popularity with every outing this year, and interest in the Mosport race will be especially keen as a local driver is sitting atop the points standings. Blackstock resident Devon Powell is, at this writing, tied with teammate Doug Goad for the series points lead heading to Trois Rivieres for round eight of the Motorola Cup. We had a chance to speak with the local racer before he packed up for the Belle Province and we discovered an extremely focused future champion. "I guess it was just natural that I was interested in racing," begins Powell. "I wasn't really into any other sports and with my father (Canadian racing stal- wart, John) being so involved in motor- sports, I just kind of blended into the racing scene. Dad never pressured me, but once I had made up my mind to go racing, he backed me all the way." A relatively late beginner by today's standards, Powell first took to the wheel of a racing go-kart at the age of 11. With his father running his team and turning the wrenches, young Devon went on to secure two Canadian Grand National Karting championships as well as a handful of provincial titles. In 1996 Powell moved up into full sized cars and became Canada's Amateur Driving Champion at the wheel of a Powell Motorsports Camaro. Turning professional in1997, he went on to become the Enduroseries Grand Sports Champion winning five races on his way to the title. And what about his year? "I'm tied for the lead in the Motorola Cup standings now, that's a position I'd like to hold onto. We won last year in Trois Rivieres, and the LS-1 Firebird we've got right now is a great car. I think we can do the job." Powell admits that his toughest com- petition will come from his teammate Goad, but also states that fellow Scugog area resident Scott Maxwell is a serious threat to his title hopes. "Scott is always tough, he's an excel- lent racer, he's always there at the end of the race and you can never count him out. We've got to watch him." And what about the future? "We have no definite plans for 1999" continues the 21-year-old. "But I'd like to be racing sedans somewhere. I've got to have fenders and a hood, no formula cars for me, they're not my style. Maybe GT-1 or GT-2 somewhere, that would be a good target." Indeed a good target to aim for. With Powell's talent, training and background, this kid's heading for the bullseye.
