In a bid to raise money to offset costs incurred when the church was destroyed in a spectacular blaze on May 31, the owner of Port Perry Printing, along with some friends, has organized a 5 km walk for Aug. 23. "There's quite a few things that the insurance company won"t cover for and we thought we could do something to raise some money for Father Charlie (Faleiro) and the church," Mr. Janssen said last Friday. Items such as gowns, other clothing and certain statues exceed the value of the church's insurance, said Mr. Janssen. So more funds are needed to replace those items. "They've already begun the architec- tural plans for the reconstruction of the church, but the insurance company wants them to save money by reusing some of the materials still there; I guess they think some of the things are still sound. "But the other items, indoors, that's the stuff we need to raise money to get back." A member of the Catholic community for about 24 years now, Mr. Janssen was discussing the fate of the 30-year- old church with friends Heather and [_ SCUGOG FINANCIAL _| SERVICES INC A " Jude McDonald recently. The owners of The Winchester Arms Pub agreed that a fundraiser should be held for the church. "It was basically Heather's idea: from there we decided we'd ask the community to help pitch in and raise some funds for the church. We're hoping to raise about $4,000 or $5,000, hopefully, and so far the response from the public has been very positive." The 5 km walk will begin at 1 p.m. on Aug. 23 at the site of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church and will proceed west to Old Simcoe Rd. where the procession will head north to Reach Rd. and come back east to Simcoe St. From there the group will make its way south back to Hwy. 7A, where it will turn west once again and return to the church. The hike is expected to take about two hours, he adds. "So far we've handed out about 300 pledge sheets and are hoping that we get some good results," said Mr. Janssen. "We appreciate the generosity from the community residents and the businesses that we've seen so far. "All the money from this is going to the church, the charity." A 50/50 draw will be held during the walk, and a dart tournament will be held after the fundraiser at The Winchester Arms Pub. It is believed that an electrical prob- lem sparked the early morning blaze on May 31 when approximately $2 million in damage was done to community's only Catholic institution.
