26- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 11, 1998 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Senior fastball squad will be vying for the Canadian crown from Aug. 16 to 23 Port Angels flying to Winnipeg in search of the national title The Port Perry Angels sr. women's fastball team earned a berth in the 1998 senior women's national championships held Aug. 16 - Aug. 23 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The team will compete against the best senior teams in Canada. Members from our national team compete on teams from across Canada, and our girls will have an oppor- tunity to match skills with these players. Coaches, Rick Finlay, Dan McNeill and Bill Dudgeon have high expectations from their team. Although they are young, they have some very good talent. Catcher «Laurie Dudgeon spent two years at Emporia State University in Kansas and attended several national team camps. Catcher Lesley Baison was a mem- ber of Ricks 93 Canada Games team and won midget national in 93 while playing for Oshawa. Pitcher Angela Davis helped the Port Perry Int. to win two eastern Canadians. Joni Sontrop pitched four years at Niagara University and helped her to reach the College World Series. Michelle Ashley is pitching at Samford University in Alabama and was a mem- ber of Ontario's Canada Games team in 97. Elaine Devlin has been pitching forever. She played for Rick in 90 to 92 and was a big factor in winning the 91 Sr. Women's Championship in Summerside P.E.I. Elaine 1s coach of Willowdale Jr. 98 Champions in Ontario. Pitcher, 2nd baseman Andrea Peters played four years at Emporia State University winning 2nd Team All American honors, she was a member of the 80 Canada Games Team. Tara Mowder plays 3rd "base and coaches the Port Perry Juniors. Tara played four years at Seneca College in North York. She won two batting titles and league Allstar. Tara played a big part in Seneca's suc- cess. She is also an assis- tant coach with Rick at- Seneca. Sommer West, 55 was a member of the 97 Ontario Canada Games Team, she also played for Guelph Midgets as a pickup and was on a winning team in 1997. Outfielder Sara Cain jumped from midget right to senior and has been a big factor patrolling cen- terfield. Sara played on the 97 Ontario Canada Games Team. Tracy Smith is the veteran player. She helped in winning the Eastern Canadians in 1993, 94 and finished her doctorate in veterinary and 1s now Dr. Smith. Kari Ann Westlake was a member of Oshawa Midgets and helped in winning the 93 midget title. She attended Jr. Nationals as a member of Willowdale Jr. in 97. Becky Moynes was also a member of Oshawa's 93 team and Willowdale Jr. team. Kirsten Philips 2nd base is a first year member. She played for Markham shortstop the past two years. In 1991 he guided Pickering Seniors to a championship in PE. I. In 1992 he took his team to Bejing, China and played in the World Championship. Rick also coached Ontario to a gold medal in 1989, 1993 and silver in 1997 at the Canada Summer Games. In 1993, 97 he was a mem- ber of Port Perry Int coach- ing staff and helped guide the team to two Eastern Canadian titles. He will be starting his twelfth year as head coach of Seneca College. Coach Dan McNeill has worked with Rick since 1985 and has been a big factor in the success of all the championships. Dan is a full time teacher but still finds coaching very reward- ing. Bill Dudgeon is in his third year with the team and 1s really looking for- ward to his first national. The team would like to thank all the supporters the team has had over the years.
