8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 11, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Work's under way as Port Perry By Chris Hall Port Perry Star With their goals set on entertaining the family, organizers have begun .work in earnest to prepare for Port Perry's annual fall fair next month. Over the din of volun- 'teers banging away in the background in their efforts to construct new display cases for Port Perry's 142nd annual fair, Isabelle Lee, chair of the homecraft division, explains the rea- soning for a number of changes visitors to the fair can expect to see during the Labor Day weekend event (Sept. 5-7) this year. "It seems that we're get- ting tight for space in some places so we've decided to make a few changes," she sald early Saturday morn- ing as a handful of workers joined her at the exhibition buildings. Exhibits will be switched between the Christie building and the Craft building to allow for more space. "Last year the junior fair ran completely out of space, so this year we decided to make a few changes and get more space. This way make sure there's room for every- thing," said Mrs. Lee. Presently new lights are being installed in the Christie building, and new display cases are being built. When the renova- tions are complete, it will house such displays as photography, needlework, and the Women's Institute. The Junior Fair will occupy the front half of the old Craft building with flowers, fruits, and veg- etables in the back. "We've been painting, hammering, sawing and carrying stuff since the beginning of July," said Mrs. Lee. "Our volunteers have shown a lot of enthu- siasm in changing things and getting set up for the fair." Also new to Port Perry's annual fall fair this year will be Dr. Bill Cohoon's mini-farm, which will be set up in the middle of the fair grounds, says fair board director Michelle Smale. There will be antique tractors and vari- ous farm animals on dis- play, as well sheep dog tri- als, and a pole and beam barn construction. Another new event is the raspberry pie auction, which is scheduled to be held Saturday (Sept. 5) at 1 p.m. in front of the main grandstand. Participants have until 11:30 a.m. that day to bring in their pies before they are judged at high noon.
