The most pleasant sur- prise of the day came after the final figures were tal- lied and organizers found themselves staring at a figure more than $4,000 past their original goal, said chair Heather Haliburton-Smith. "It was just great, defi- nitely a surprise," she said, totalling the 1998 pledges at just over $12,000. "I was nervous to set a goal of $10,000 and stayed with our usual $8,000 but this 1s just excellent." Other new record highs set Sunday were the num- ber of riders, she contin- ues. "Last year we had 10 teams and usually we go up by two teams each year but this time we went up by five for 15 teams and about 75 riders. "The support from the riders and the community was absolutely amazing this year. We had beautiful weather for the event, a perfect lake and a great community." And, says Ms Haliburton-Smith, the sev- enth annual fundraiser for Easter Seals and other local childrens' charities is already being planned. "You'll definitely see them on the water in 1999. We're going to try and match this year's results; this was such a great year," she said, adding that the funds raised this year bring the event's six-year total to around $40,000. "We're going to be trying to raise our total figure to $50,000 next year; the community has showed us what it can do this year and we hope to repeat it next year. "The Rotary Club would like to give an extremely big thanks to the commu- nity of Scugog Township and each and every rider, sponsor and donator," Ms Haliburton-Smith said, adding that another big thank-you goes out to Port Perry Marina owner John Mackey and his staff who donated their time and machines to the event. A new record time was also set this year on the triangular course just off of Palmer Park as Grant Hooker shattered Hawaiian Five-O team- mate Matt Yeoman's 1997 time record with his own blazing time of 1.11.41 in his first year of Aquarama competition. The overall fastest team time went to the IGA-spon- sored Mooncricket Racing squad whose five riders went around the course in a total time of 6.37.08. On the flip side, The Port Perry Star's Ginni Todd posted the slowest time of the day with a mark of almost four minutes. A record amount was raised this year as participants managed to collect just over $12,000 and a new high was set for teams when 15 took to the water just off of Palmer Park. Spectators walked away pleased as there was a number of spills on the personal water craft as riders sought to manoeuvre through the course in record time. The Star's Ginni Todd (below), however, took the scenic route as she completed the course in just about four minutes in total, good enough for the slowest time of the day, and all the prizes that go with it. 4 b held its sixth annual - pledges for the 1998 Aquarama fundraiser was Bryan Pawlin, $1,350; Paul Michel, $1,175; Dr. Bob Allin, $1,120; Yvonne Spofford, $1,000; and Bob Smith with $762.
