Wrecks, rain delays and racing: All in a night at Mosport's track By "Wally" Nesbittl Special to The Star We offer a brief synopsis of last Saturday's racing at Mosport Speedway. We had a big wreck on the first lap of the first race. then we had a forty minute rain delay. Then some good racing. Then intermission when door prizes were awarded (skunked again!). Then more good racing followed by a fifty lap demolition derby which ended ten min- utes before the Clarington Curfew. And then technical inspection. But to elaborate... Due to curfew con- straints from the previous weekend, the ThunderCar feature race was put over to this week, and at the end of the twenty lap dash, 1t appeared that Claremont's Donevan Price had earned his first career feature win. Technical inspection later revealed an illegal Positrac rear end in Price's car resulting in his disqualification. The win was then awarded to the Motor City's Fred Travis with points leader Les Stanley claiming sec- ond spot followed by Ken Perrier, Dave Crowther and Shawn Hardy. In the scheduled ThunderCar events, the Shark-toothed Camaro of Larry MacKenzie crossed the line at the head of the pack in both the feature and the heat race, but an illegal engine modification sent MacKenzie home pointless for his efforts. Heat wins were therefore awarded to Joe Anderson and Les Stanley, who also took home the checkers in the feature run. In the night's only Street Stock heat, points leader Steve Knab earned top spot, surviving a race long battle with Bob Kish. The feature race was slowed by a total of five caution periods and at the checkered flag 1t was Bowmanville's Jim Rossiter claiming the win ahead of a determined Knab, Bob Kish and Andy Warbutton. Newmarket's John Carlisle held off the Brown brothers for the heat win in the Modified division, but Graham Brown exacted his revenge by taking the feature race after a hard battle with Larry Jackson. Dwight Brown, Darrin Wrigglesworth and Carlisle rounded out the top five. The headlining event of the evening was the second appearance this year of the OSCAAR Super Lake Model Series. Former Mosport regu- lars Stu Robinson Jr. and Mike Bricknell were rewarded with heat victo- ries and then headed into the fifty lap SLM feature. Twenty-three cars took the green flag for the fea- ture with Uxbridge's Al Thomson in his Pontiac Grand Prix jumping into the early lead, a position that he held until the 30th circuit. Coming to the green flag after the sixth ) caution, Stu Robinson oN poked the nose of his Monte Carlo alongside of the Thomson car and pow- ered into top spot heading onto Mosport's back straight, pulling Ajax's Mike Bricknell along with him. The remaining twenty laps were run caution free with Robinson earing the victor's laurels followed by Bricknell, Thomson, John Owen and Gary Passer. Only twelve cars were running at the finish, two of the track's victims being Oakwood's Dave Taylor who retired the #11 Monte Carlo with engine troubles and Whitby's Terry Robichaud who left the track with front end dam- age. The OSCAR Late Models return to Mosport on Sept. 5th for their final appearance this season. Oshawa artist Eva Mustafa, in her first solo exhibition in Durham Region, presents figure- based monoprints and sculpture in the Visual Arts Centre's Mill Gallery, August 20 - September 11. Monoprints are one-of- a-kind impressions made by painting on glass or plastic, then transferring the images, through the use of a printing press, onto a surface of fine rag paper. The highly tex- tured sculptures, assem- blages of found materials, complement and echo the grainy characteristics dis- played in the monoprints, thus underscoring the con- Mustafa exhibit to open Aug. 20 nections that exist between line and surface. Born In Czechoslovakia, the artist studied at the Dept. of Plastic Arts and Art Science, Sorbonne University, Paris, and has lived in Canada since 1987, presently residing in Oshawa.
