Cl Rio ai "-- A PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 25, 1998 - 9 mdi By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Durham Regional Police destroyed a fox yesterday morning that animal con- trol officers confirmed was infected with mange. Animal control officers had urged people to stay clear of the sick fox that had been seen wandering around Simcoe St. just north of Port Perry. While the small red fox poses no danger to anyone, Vickie McWhirter, an ani- mal control officer with the Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Shelter, said the best course of action would be to avoid it. The animal suffers from mange, a parasite which in time will prove fatal. "Foxes eat mice and moles and groundhogs and Emergency crews were calle an ambulance crew and Uxbrid d out to an accident scene just west of Epsom last Friday (Aug. 21) after a man lost control of his car and rolled it into a field on the north side of Reach Rd. Father Charles Faleiro, pastor for the lance to the hospital where he was treated for injuries. Durham Police officers, it must have eaten some- thing with the parasite already in it," she said Friday afternoon, after she made another unsuccessful attempt at capturing the animal. VERRIER Eo EEA ge firefighters all attended the accident scene. "He was very sick, not Energy efficient windows reduce draft & increase warmth. Alcan vinyl & aluminum windows. There is no treatment to cure his illness, she says. "He's was no danger to anyone. He's just looking for a meal." But, she says, that does not mean that people should feed them. "We found out that peo- ple had been feeding it, they felt sorry it. That's why it was hanging around the area," she said, explaining that the fox killed yesterday morning was the last of four known to have mange in the area. "Please, please don't feed sick animals." The animal had been spotted for close to a week around Castle Harbour and Simcoe St., as well as Candlelight Rd., she says. While chasing the fox is not in her job description, Red fox destroyed after attempts to capture it fail it 1s something that must be done. "Wildlife 1s not our department, we don't have the equipment for it. But, we have to do something so I've been trying to scoop him with our net. He's get- ting sicker each day," she said, guessing that the par- asite would have killed him in a week's time. "You'll see foxes all the time but if you see one killed on the road, that means 1t had mange. These animals aren't stupid -- they know enough not to go on the road. When they're sick they go anywhere hunting for food and that usually takes them near homes and onto the roads. The first sign an animal suffers from mange, she says, 1s that it has no hair on its tail, and later, down the rest of its body. "It's tail looks like a lit- tle brittle stick. Pretty soon they don't even look like foxes, more like little hair- less coyotes." Kids who like to act There is still time to enroll your child in this fall's kids acting classes taught by John H.
