Ba SN Students may get extended holiday By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Students at public high schools in Durham Region won't be going back to class as scheduled unless last-minute negotiations end a strike by teachers. The teachers, represented by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF), officially went on strike last Thursday (Aug. 20) after talks with the Durham District School Board broke down. They voted more than 90 per cent in favor of the strike at a union meeting in June. There have been predictions through- out the summer that the strike would occur. Teachers are working on a collec- tive agreement with the Durham Board, but have taken a hardline stance on a number of issues, including staffing and working conditions. Teachers are particularly upset that the Durham Board isn't planning to replace 118 teachers who have retired, despite the fact more students are enter- ing high schools here, said Pat Jermey, president of OSSTF Local 13. And the teachers have vowed not to back down in their opposition to a pro- vincial directive that requires them to teach the equivalent of seven out of eight classes a day, one more than has been demanded of them in the past. "The Durham District School Board is receiving from the provincial govern- ment more money in funding next year, and more students are entering the sys- tem. Yet they're staffing us with 118 few- er teachers than we had last year," she said Friday. "We think that doesn't add up." Region last urdle for IShmans By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Bill and Paula Lishman are one hurdle away from getting the green light for their proposed manufacturing facility in Clarington. After receiving the go-ahead from Clarington council early last month, the Lishmans will go before regional council on Sept. 29 with hopes that they will finally get the approval needed for their new 25,000 square-foot facility. "At the moment we have received approval from Clarington to set up shop there and will go before regional planning late next month," said Mr. Lishman Friday. The proposal, which has generat- ed controversy in Clarington, received support from seven out of eight councillors there. While he couldn't comment on what will happen with the region, Mr. Lishman's now hoping for the best. "Traditionally the region agrees with whatever decision the municipality comes up with," he said, noting that there was strong opposition to his proposal. "This was the biggest organized opposition to anything that they've ever had in Clarington, and | don't know why. It's cost us an arm and a leg to do all the testing required to show them (council and opposition) that everything's going to be okay." Plans call for the Paula Lishman Furs company to construct a 25,000 square-foot fur manufactur- ing plant in an abandoned gravel pit west of Orono, on the north side of Taunton Rd.
