DURHAM DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD Quality Education Today - For Tomorrow IMPORTANT BULLETIN to All Secondary School Students of the Durham Secondary School Teachers' Strike The Durham District School Board received notice on Thursday, August 20 from the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation, District 13 (formerly District 17) that it would begin a strike August 21, 1998. Negotiation dates prior to the beginning of school have been scheduled; however, in the event that these talks prove to be unsuccessful, it is possible that the strike will continue into the school year which begins for secondary students on Tuesday, September 8. The strike could take the form of a work-to-rule where regular school classes are held but no co-curricular activities are held; rotating strikes where one or more secondary schools are without teachers; or a full strike where all secondary schools are without teachers. The Durham District School Board would prefer not to subject its students to a difficult situation and is requesting that all secondary students not proceed to school on September 8. Buses will continue to run for all elementary students but secondary school students are asked not to access those buses on the first day of classes. On September 8, secondary students are asked to listen to one of the radio stations listed below or to call the local secondary school for further information and instructions. Updated recorded notices about the secondary strike situation also will be available by phoning the board at (905) 666-5500, (905) 686-2711 or 1-800-265-3968. Chelmsford hit a solo home run to make the score 4-1. Late in the game Paul Goreski doubled and was brought home by a John Ennis hit. McColloch singled then scored on a Larry Pilkey double to the-fence. Pilkey then reached home after an infield error. The final score was Chelmsford 1 - Port Perry 7. Goreski had a fine outing after coming off the two week DL. Goreski struck out nine Chelmsford batters to record the win. The Merchants struggled in their second game against Garson. Port's only Merchants falter in Sunridge, gear up to host OASA champ games hits were a triple by Todd Smart and a Jason McBride single. Errors and lack of hitting was the story in this game.
