Presenting the rinting, Heather McDonald of The Province unveils social studies revisions By Chris Hall Port Perry Star While education officials admit that they support last week's elementary cur- riculum reform, they are upset over the govern- ment's timing. Marshall Jarvis, presi- dent of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA), said the announcement on social sciences change is good for students, but will be diffi- cult to achieve this year. "In terms of the class- room, it seems to be fair and balanced. I believe it will definitely address the needs of the students," he said Friday morning. But the Aug. 26 announcement was made too late in the summer, and in an effort to meet the Tory government's agenda, said CHRIS HALL/PORT PERRY STAR THERAPY & COUNSELLING Dr. Bill Eull, Ph.D..C Psych Psychologist have family or relationship issues, stress, anxiety, depression or are in crisis because of trauma or abuse. "They had to finish reforming the elementary system curriculum before the reformed Grade 9 and secondary curriculum is done later this school year. It fulfills their political agenda, not the educational agenda," he said. "Although the majority of teachers will be back to school on Sept. 8, some will be back to work Sept. 1... that only leaves a few days for them to organize, under- stand and prepare to imple- ment the new curriculum," he added. "If these guys were working in the private sector they'd be fired for this kind of planning... and we make them ministers." Mr. Jarvis said the gov- ernment introduced changes to four other sub- ject areas earlier in the year, but left the latest announcement until the end of summer. Changes to the sciences and technolo- gies curriculum were made in March, and shortly after came alterations to arts, physical education, and French, he said. Mr. Jarvis said the changes should make for a Curriculum changes okay but timing is questioned better education system. "Over all, I think the teachers will find the changes acceptable. The expectations of the stu- dents are going to be higher, and I think they appreciate that," Mr. Jarvis said. "This curriculum positions our students to compete on the same level as others in national tests." Changes made to social sciences in last Wednesday's announce- ment include a heavy emphasis on Canada and history, while some geogra- phy requirements have been dropped in favor of economic and business lessons. Kathy LeFort, Scugog's representative on the region's separate school board, agrees that the changes may be for the best. But she too feels the province's timing is less than ideal. "It's always good to keep up-to-date, but the timing is poor. We've received a lot of (information) over the summer, but there is no way we can implement them the way they should be."
