More than $200 million has been raised for cancer research since Terry Fox held his Marathon of Hope in 1980, says Dr. Mike Gilmour, and all of it is needed as the battle against cancer con- tinues. ~ Researchers have made huge strides in helping cancer victims, he said. ~ "There's definitely been improvements In therapy over the past 15 years," he said. "Just look at ALL, a childhood-type of cancer. Thirty years ago it was 100 per cent fatal. Now, with added radiation therapy and bone marrow transplants, almost 70 per cent of all children are cured. "That could single-handedly be the biggest break-through we've had so far. Certainly it would be one of our biggest success stories." Over the past 40 years medical advances in cancer research have made 'saving or extending the lives of thousands possible. Effective treatment for cancer victims became a reality in the 1950s, when radiation therapy was instituted. Years later, in the 60s, researchers took an even larger step forward, said Dr. Gilmour. "During the 60s they introduced mul- tiple chemotherapies and later they came upon mammographies, which cut breast cancer mortality by a third. "In the 70s researchers and doctors started using bone marrow transplants to save lives and in the 80s they started doing genetic modeling, where they could actually see a normal cell multiplying out of control and becoming malignant because of defect in the normal cell gene." And in this decade, further studies have been done on the genetic model, and researchers are coming up with ways to look at cells and tell which ones could become malignant. As for the future, Dr. Gilmour says researchers are closing in on ways to kill cancer cells without harming healthy ones.
