Not since the early 1980s has the Lung Association held a door-to-door cam- paign in Scugog Township, says community services co-ordinator Sheri Cotton. "This is the first year canvassers will be back in Port Perry for many years," she said, adding that a lack of resources and volunteers meant giving up on Port years ago. "But we've been can- vassing in Uxbridge for three years now, and we decided to try Port Perry again to see how many vol- unteers we can get out." Ms Cotton said it looks like the Oct. 5-23 fundrais- er could be successful in the local area. "We've had quite a few people volunteer already for canvassing, although we could always use more." During the fundraiser, the Lung Association hopes to knock on the doors of approximately 1,100 homes in hopes of collecting $3,000. Canvassers will be approaching homes on their own time, she says, and residents can expect to be asked for donations usually in the early evening hours. "There's nice weather this time of year, nearing the fall, and we want to raise awareness before November, which is Lung Awareness month," she said when asked about the time chosen for canvassing. Money raised from the campaign for the not-for- profit organization will go toward medical research and community education programs such as Port Perry's Better Breathers Club and the Breathe Easy program, which help adults cope with chronic lung dis- ease and enjoy an active and rewarding lifestyle.
