Sgt. Ken Hudson, an officer with Port's 26 Division, reports that five young men were arrested and charged last Friday evening (Sept. 11) after things got out of hand around 9 p.m. on the fall fair's midway. According to Sgt. Hudson, PCs Todd Hillock and Bernie Fitzpatrick Jr. were working at the fair on paid assignment short- ly after 9 p.m., and had already broken up a num- ber of small fights and drug-related situations. According to police reports, the two officers were surrounded by more than 100 youths, and swarmed. While PC Fitzpatrick fought off a number of the assailants, PC Hillock was attacked, grabbed by the throat, punched and kicked in the groin. The officers were also taunted by other youths, said Sgt. Hudson, adding that pep- per spray was used to stop at least one of the attack- ers. Once free from the youths, the two officers radioed for help and were soon joined by 12 officers from Pickering, two from Whitby, the police paddy wagon and the canine unit. A while later, say police, the officers were swarmed by more youths, but no injuries were reported. As a result of the inci- dents, Durham Police charged two 18-year-olds and one 19-year-old , all Uxbridge residents, with one count each of failing to leave premises when directed. Police also charged a 21-year-old Leaskdale 2 Town Hall Centre for the Performing Arts 302 QUEEN STREET, PORT PERRY PRESENTS... He had left the fair during the altercation but later turned himself into police. The suspect was wanted on a warrant for breach of probation and failing to appear in court. He was in court yesterday morning and was released on recognizance. A 21-year-old Main St. North resident was charged with one count of assaulting police, one count of obstructing police, and one count of causing a disturbance. Police allege he was the male who injured PC Hillock. As a precaution, six paid officers were on duty Saturday evening at the fair, along with the paddy wagon and a canine unit. Boy assaulted Durham Police are also looking for answers after a 14-year-old boy was allegedly grabbed by a group of older boys, taped up and assaulted. According to police, the boy was with his friends at the fair Saturday (Sept. 9:30 - 5:30 or by appt. 12) when he went off on his own to get a slice of pizza. He was approached from behind by a group of older boys and instructed to walk straight ahead and not look back, or he would be killed, police said. The boy was taken to the west side of the park where he was tied to a tree with duct tape, and had his eyes and mouth covered with the tape as well, police say. The older boys punched him and at one point one of the males was set to give him a "magical potion" but was told not to by another male because it might kill him, police report the youth as say- ing. The group soon left but told the boy that they would be back for him. The boy freed himself from the pole and called his parents, who notified the police. The boy did not suffer serious injuries.
