"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 15, 1998 - 11 After close to a year of planning and preparing, the Road Watch program was officially launched in Scugog Township last Friday (Sept. 11) morning. Joining in on the announcement were, from left, Marilyn Morrison, who helped form the committee in her home town of Caledon, Scugog chair Janet Vendrig, and Durham Police officer Paul Williams. Program targets aggressive drivers Road Watch launched in Scugog From page 1 could for road safety. It is a complex issue, and the solution is not easy. But we decided it would be best if we tried to take back ownership of the roads." The strength of Road Watch is that anyone can report a driver who is a potential hazard on the roadway, said Mrs. Vendrig. If someone is seen driving poorly, a citi- zen report form can be filled out and dropped off at a number df stores in the township. Those fill- ing out the forms are asked to give the vehicles make and model, the offense, and their own name and address as well. The forms will be picked up and delivered to the appropriate police service, depending on where the infraction occurred, and a letter will be mailed to the offender if warranted. A second report on a particular driver could see another written warn- ing or a phone call from police, while a third com- plaint would result in a personal visit from an offi- cer and possibly a fine. Taking a leading role in the initiative was Marilyn Morrison, who sought a way to bring safe- ty back to the streets of her home town for her family, including three teenage sons, friends and neighbors. "Dangerous aggressive driving was taking the lives of young people in Caledon," she said Friday, explaining that an educa- tional program called Stop Accident Fatalities Everywhere (SAFE) was set up in 1993, and was later replaced by Road Watch a short while after. "Awareness, education and enforcement are the driving components of Road Watch. We're not only trying to enforce the rules of the road, but to change people's attitude and behavior while they're on it." Since the program's inception, road fatalities in Caledon have dropped from 30 in 1996 to just six in 1997. There have only been three so far in 1998, said Mrs. Morrison, who daily receives inquiries from municipalities looking to start up their own Road Watch program. Anyone looking for information on 1t can call 1-877- RDWATCH. Durham Police 26 Division Inspector Chuck Mercier said local police have acknowledged that "road safety is very impor- tant to the people of Scugog. The people here care about their commu- nity and friends. "People in this commu- nity working together can solve problems. The intro- duction of Road Watch has the full support of Durham Police, the township and lots of help from many vol- unteers," he said. "We should see positive end results." Also in attendance for the official launch of the program was Uxbridge mayor Gerri-Lynn O'Connor, who said plans are already being made for the program in her township. "We've already taken the first step to imple- menting the program," she said. "It's a wonderful program and we're looking forward to bringing it to Uxbridge." Information on the pro- gram has already been distributed in the mail and additional citizen report forms, as well as drop off boxes, can be found at the township offices as well as most con- venience stores in the township.
