Leaded Sus a oS ds ada Bb EE 14- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 15, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Strike in week two From page 1 picket lines Aug. 21. "Wherever we turn, there are roadblocks," she said. "There are roadblocks in the (provincial) funding for- mula, and there are roadblocks in the text of Bill 160. "You have to wonder 1f this wasn't the plan all along." Durham public school trustees and teachers were to resume talks today. Negotiations broke off Sept. 6, and late last week the board extend- ed an invitation to the teachers to come back to the table. Meanwhile, separate board negotiators met (Sept. 11), and tabled an offer aimed at ending their strike. They've given the teachers until this coming Friday (Sept. 18) to make a decision. Mrs. LeFort is hope- ful the offer will end- school closures which began last week, after the separate board locked its teachers out. That decision was made after teachers announced they would not teach the extra class some of them had been assigned by the board. Board officials said the decision to close schools was made in the inter- est of student safety. * "I hope they seriously consider our offer," said Mrs. LeFort. It's been a great growing season , says OMAFRA rep Local farmers prepare for harvest By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Local farmers are enjoying a brief break in their routine before the hectic harvest season begins. Neil Moore, a crops specialist with Port Perry's Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Farm and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) office, says that activity on area farms has slowed down while crops soak up the last few weeks of warm weather. "We're kind of at an in-between period right now," he said last Thursday. "Most Spring crops are ripe or ripening and the corn and soybeans are doing well. Everything is maturing rapidly because of the good weather we've been having." With the calculated heat units for the year sitting at just under 2,900 -- compared to the average of about 2,600 in other years -- Mr. Moore says the 1998 crops are still ahead of last year by almost three weeks. "'Everyone's getting ready for harvest in October and we may avoid the frost if we keep a couple weeks ahead," he said. Constant warm weather has kept crops growing in certain areas, it should be a good, year over all for farmers. "We didn't get as much rain as we wanted to in the beginning, but later in the season we got what we needed and now we have good moisture," said Mr. Moore. "The pastures have recovered nicely with the rain and cooler temperatures now." At the present time farmers are letting their corn crops dry down in preparation of future harvest. Beans can be harvested at just about any time. "I think right now we're in a lull, but everyone's Just gearing up for the harvest. It should run into October, but if we get some hitches, like rain which would keep the machinery out of the fields, it could be later." The only downfall with such a good growing season, he explains, is that produce is plentiful and that will drive the selling price down on commodities market. "Prices are still low... actually they're right at rock bottom. We had a little positive upward movement this week, but we're still near the bottom of the bar- with teachers Friday Member Durham Real Estate Board GR TET CR Oo) Toronto Real Estate Board COLDWELL CY (cd rel." this year, and while there were shortages of rainfall Country IL ANE | 4 ON 4 EC lo) il =] 5-1-1" Call (905) KEITH PUCKRIN** BRETT PUCKRIN* A FAMILY PLAYGROUND!
