a he cit EER 2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 15, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Canine unit nabs car thief after late-night chase here Three teens are facing charges after two vehicles were stolen in the area last week. Durham Regional Police report that two 19-year-old men and one 19-year-old woman, all from Uxbridge, were arrested last Friday after a 1997 Lumina was stolen from an Uxbridge address. A 1996 Chev Blazer was also stolen from Markham, police say. Police say they caught a lucky break when someone called them just before 4 a.m.Friday (Sept. 11) to say there were two suspicious vehicles parked behind the Post Office on Queen St. in Port Perry. Arriving to check out the situation, PC Jim Hunter found the vehicles and began to run checks on their plates, say police. } At that point the two vehicles were driven from the parking lot and made their way through town to Crandell St. While following the two vehicles, PC Hunter watched as the Lumina pulled ahead of the Blazer and turned onto Bigelow St. The lone male driver drove away at a high rate of speed, police say. Following the car PC Hunter later dis- covered that the vehicle had been driven across Reach St. and plowed into a dirt pile in front of the Rural/Metro Ambulance station. Skid marks were found leading across the road and the car's front end was caved in, say police. The driver fled the scene. A canine unit was brought in, and the suspect was later found in the wooded area just north of the station. After further investigation into the incident, police discovered that a Fourth Ave. home in Uxbridge had been broken into sometime during the day last Tuesday (Sept.8) and that homeowners did not realize that the keys to the Lumina were taken. Later that night, the suspect returned and stole the car, allege police. A 19-year-old Uxbridge man has been arrested and faces one count of break, enter, and theft; one count of theft over $5,000; and one count of possession over $5,000. Later that day, police discovered two more suspects sleeping in a Chev Blazer behind a store on Main St. in Uxbridge. A check on the vehicle also revealed that the truck had been stolen from the Markham area earlier that week as well. A 19-year-old man and woman, both from Uxbridge, each face one count of possession over $5,000.
