20- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 22, 1998 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR Whitby Warriors Tyke team takes crown Port boys help lead Whitby to an Ontario lacrosse title By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Whitby Warriors Tyke A lacrosse team will be special guests at city council next month when they receive recognition for the provincial title they won earlier this summer. Included in the team of 15 runners and one goalie will be two Port Perry boys and a young lad from Brooklin. All are mem- bers of the team that captured the Ontario crown in Orillia in the beginning of August. The 8-5 win over Scarborough in the Aug. 2 final gave the Durham team the title and capped off an unprobable season in which they went undefeated. Including regular and post-sea- son play, as well as tournaments, the group of seven and eight- year-old boys completed the 1998 season with a record of 28 wins and no losses or ties. "It was an exceptional season for the team. We're all amazed at our record and our success," said assistant coach Scott Dezan. Representing the Whitby Minor Lacrosse Association, the team -- which was sponsored by Colorado Avalanche defenceman season long," said trainer Kerry O'Hare. "We thought they would be our biggest challenge of the tournament because we had faced them in two or three other tournaments and they played us tough. "We figured it would come down to Six Nations, Scarborough and us; the three best teams in the province right now. These are a good group of boys who are playing excellent lacrosse right now." The win at the finals comes just one year after the Whitby team was knocked out of the tournament in the semifinals last year. Prior to last year's loss, the Whitby Warriors were provincial champs in 1994-96, 1990 and 1991 as well as 1986 and 1967. "This team has a great histo- ry, a great tradition," said Mr. O'Hare. "We had one of the boys who was on the team last year stand up 1n the dressing room before the final game and give a two minute speech on what it's like to lose and how much it would mean to win now.
