"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 22, 1998 - 21 ModJacks set to open regular season Sunday From Page 19 The Modacks' record in the pre-season was three losses, two wins and a draw. Last Thursday evening they skated to a 6-6 deadlock with the Bradford Bulls, allowing the visitors a goal in the final minute to gain the tie. On Saturday night, also at the Scugog Arena, they had an easy time of it, romping to an 8-1 win over the Gravenhurst Hawks. In the Bradford game, Seth Gray had a hat trick, Mike Hamilton notched a pair and Dan Lyons scored a single. Tom Chambers was the trigger man in the win over Gravenhurst with three goals and two assists, while Adam Bonneveld had two, as did Casey Van Schagen. Mike Strutt got the other for the ModJacks. Bonneveld, who led all scorers in the Central League last season, continued with his hot hand against Little Britain, with two goals and two assists. Rookie Jason Hanson had a goal and two assists, Mike Heasman and Andrew pass from Hanson and unloaded a rocket from the left point through a maze of players in front of the Merchant net. Boyle, who is from Renfrew in the Ottawa Valley where he played Junior B last season, looks like a welcome addition to the blue line for the ModJacks. He's got size and is a good skater and puck handler. Boyle is attending Durham College. Another newcomer to the line this sea- son 1s Greg Blackburn of Oshawa. He's mobile and quick, and seems to relish the heavy hitting. And the ModJacks have several veteran defencemen from last year's squad back for another season including Rob Murphy, Heasman and Jeff Clarke, who has been wearing the captain's 'C' in some of the pre-season games. With this kind of blue line corps, the ModJacks should be much stronger defen- sively than last season. And Jeff Mackie has returned to the squad. He's an out- standing netminder who played the second half of last season and helped the team From Page 19 was treated in '61. The Maris name has been given more respect and acco- lades now rather than at the time when they would have carried more justice, but such is the American way. Ironically, Sosa, the man who has History repeats itself with Sosa helped awaken America from their heart of stone slumber 1s being over- looked for the same reasons. History really can repeat itself. "God Bless America" Sosa says repeatedly when interviewed. No need, Sammy. They've already done it for you. Class dismissed. DAVID SHEARMAN Boyle had the others from their spots along the blue line. Boyle's goal was a beauty. He took a grab fourth place and the final playoff berth. The team will sign its second net- minder this week. Goreski shuts down Suny's 6-0 From Page 19 effort, Jim Duncan put the icing on the cake with an empty net goal set up by Rick Campbell. Taylor Fuels 3 Pineridge Sports 5 When the dust had set- tled, Pineridge Sports was standing victorious with a high scoring win against Taylor Fuels. Ken Smart Jr. got Pineridge on the board first with an unas- sisted effort. At the start of the second period, Danny Taylor found the back of the net with assists to Phil Lalonde and Dave Burnett. Only 17 seconds later, Dean Smith brought the score back within one on an unassisted effort. But Pineridge kept the ball rolling with back-to- back goals from Todd Smart only eight seconds apart. Taylor Fuels tried to stay in it with a goal from Rob Kroonenburg assisted by Ken Little and Tim Curry. But Dave Burnett responded with an unas- sisted effort of his own to put Pineridge back up by three. Willie Edwards scored once more from Jarrett Harman but it was too lit- tle too late for Taylor Fuels. Harrison Fuels 1 Joe's Pizzeria 6 Bill Weisflock was the big hero this week for Joe's by scoring a hat trick while leading his team to a lop-sided victory. John Ennis got Harrison on the board first with assists from Craig Leask and Jim Beatty. But this is where Harrison's luck would stop because Joe's came right back with gix unanswered goals led by Bill Weisflock's three, Steve Churchill, Keijjo Kinnunen and Carl Fitzgerald. Those goals were set up by Dave Dickson (three), Steve Churchill (two), Keijo Kinnunen, Dave Jackson, Rick Hope and goalie Ken Harman who played well between the pipes. Taylor Ford/Mercury 1 Compton Communications 2 Through this tough defensive battle, these teams had the crowd on the edge of their seat which turned out to be a close Compton victory. Todd Wilbur came offithe blue line to score Compton's first goal assisted by Scott Wilbur and Peter Somers. But 20 seconds later, Brian Stevenson tied the game at one with assists award- ed to Brett Laycoe and Rich Bricknell. Compton had to fight hard to hold off Taylor's attack but at 2:22 of the second, Peter Somers scored the crucial goal (set up by Scott Wilbur), to take the two points for Compton Communications. Van & Truck World 4 Cedar Creek Cont. 3 Van & Truck World earned their two points with a hard fought victory over Cedar Creek. For the first goal Van & Truck World's Brad Menzies cashed in on a rebound from Ken Jeffrey and Mark Jobb. Cedar Creek then replied right back by scor- ing two goals by Karl Durham and Nathan Brown. Assist was award- ed to John Harman. But Van & Truck World's next three goals turned the tide of the game. They were scored by Dave Buxcey, Jat Adam, and Brad Menzies. Assists were awarded to Mike Geer, Brad Menzies, Mark Jobb, Steve Stiles and Dave Buxcey. For a last second effort, Bob Collins scored for Cedar Creek assisted by Andy Steele and Derek Fitzgerald. Suny's Gas Bar 0 Goreski Roofing 6 Goreski goalie, Troy Glazier definitely put together a Vezina-winning performance in the last game this morning as Goreski walked all over Suny's 6-0.Goresk Shortly into the game Larry Pilkey perfectly found the bottom corner of the net assisted by Todd Healey and Rob Scott. Doug Bronson then picked up Larry Pilkey and Bruce Gracie's rebounds to put Goreski's up 2-0. Pilkey then scored number two on a weak shot that the goalie should have had. Ray Zaparanuik then added to Goreski's lead. Todd Healey and Jason Warner picked up assists. Larry Pilkey then secured his hat trick with a blazing shot that found the corner. Jason Warner then scored Goreski's sixth goal from Todd Healey and Bruce Gracie. 21 W.Xed Ech foled (@ 1] [o] 28; [oT] {2} EQUIPMENT EXCHANGE Saturday, September 26, 1998 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. BLACKSTOCK ARENA Please drop off your used Hockey Equipment Friday, September 25, 1998 between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. or Saturday, September 26, 1998 between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Make sure your name and your asking price are clearly labelled on the equipment. 20% of sales goes to Blackstock Minor Hockey.
