"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" a ------ © PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 29, 1998 - 9 Moffatt proposes town hall forum on local issues Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt wants to call a "town hall" style public meeting in the near future to hear what residents are saying about municipal Issues generally, and two specifically. He told council during a planning meeting last week that with the final tax bills for 1998 due to start going out Oct. 1, there will be a lot of people wanting to know why their taxes have gone up -- in some cases quite substan- tially -- this year. And he said the other issue that councillors should hear the public's view on is the proposed Greater Toronto Services Board (GTSB) The provincial govern- ment last June introduced a bill that would set up the GTSB to include all municipalities in what is called the Greater Toronto Area. Scugog council and other councils from small rural communities are adamantly opposed to the formation of GTSB as pro- posed, because they feel it will give too much power and authority to Toronto. And they see it as another layer of government that will be expensive and unnecessary. "Is there a public mood to move to some other structure of (municipal) government? We need to know the public thinking on the GTSB and on the taxation issues," said Mayor Moffatt. He wants the meeting some time in the next four weeks, and says it will be held at the new Scugog Community Hall at the Arena. KFA meeting coming up The Scugog Chapter of the K.F.A. will be holding 1ts upcoming meeting on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the basement of St. John's Presbyterian Church in Port Perry at the corners of Simcoe and Queen Streets. The meeting will be the first since June, and give members a chance to catch-up on what's hap- pening with the K.F.A. in other chapters, and at the regional level. We'll review what is left to be done for 1998, share some fish sto- ries, and begin plans for the winter ice fishing creel surveys along with other activities that are in the works for 1999. Members and non- members are welcome to attend. Lots of free park- ing and refreshments. Show continuing Artist Dianne Patterson's "The Wonderful World of Little People and Other Delights" is on view at Scugog Memorial Public Library, 231 Water Street, until Oct. 15.
