"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 29, 1998 - 19 Police report Bomb threat results in evacuation of local bank ) Durham Regional Police were called to a local bank Friday afternoon after an unknown caller phoned in a bomb threat. Durham Police say that just before 4 p.m. on Sept. 25, someone placed a call to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Port Perry and said there was a bomb in the building before hanging up. No time was given for the bomb to go off, add police. Staff and customers were evacuated to the parking lot and three officers -- PCs Frank Hammond, Terry Richardson and Dave Mann -- attended the CIBC bank and checked the building before allowing employees to return around 5 p.m.. Searches for any unusual packages or items were held, but nothing was found. The phone call was traced to a pay phone but a location was not determined. Thieves surprised A View Lake Rd. resident returned to her home just in time to spoil an attempt by thieves. Police say a woman returned to her home around 2:50 p.m. on Sept. 24 and discovered a dark-colored two-door Oldsmobile with tinted windows backed into her driveway, to the garage. A lone occupant was in the vehicle at the time. Thinking that maybe the car belonged to a friend of her husband or daughter, the woman walked around the side of the garage and ran into a man who was wear- ing a light-colored track suit. He fled the scene and dropped a bag containing jewelry from the house. Checking inside, the woman discovered that a door had been pried open and that bottles of liquor were scattered around her kitchen floor. A closer look revealed that thieves had taken a portable CD player, a five-gallon gas can, a case of pop, and the woman's bank book. House robbed Police were called to a Scugog Island residence on Sept. 26 after thieves attempt- ed to clean out a Fralick's Beach Rd. home. Sometime around 1:45 a.m. last Saturday morning, the home owners returned home and discovered the house had been entered. They called police and stayed outside until they arrived. A search by PC Hunter revealed that thieves had entered through a basement window. Around that same time a neighbor called police after two men went running through his backyard. The Canine Unit was called in, but was unsuccessful in its attempts to find any suspects.
