24- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 29, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SrorTs Port tries again for first win tonight From Page 23 Thornbury noted that his team appeared nervous and tense during the game, perhaps a case of opening game jit- ters, especially for the rookies. "A few of the boys have never played a ne of Junior C hockey before today," he said. And, he said he's quite prepared to be patient with the team and its rookies -- up to a point. "They need eight to 10 games to feel their way around. But after that, nobody's a rookie any more." He also pointed to the fact that the team has had only a couple of full practices together since the line-up was selected towards the end of last week. He said over the next while he will work on the specialty teams --penalty killing and power plays-in practice. "That's where you can win hockey games," he said. He also wants his team to shoot the puck more, something they were not doing enough during the match against Georgina. And he'll stay with netminder Mackie 'when the team hits the road for the first time -- tonight when they travel to Lakefield to take on the Chiefs who are always tough in their own building. Thornbury said he had no thoughts of yanking Mackie during Sunday's game against Georgina in favor of Ben Jillard. "He (Mackie) is going to take his lumps from time to time." But he's the guy Thornbury is counting on to carry the bulk of the load as far as netminding chores are concerned, just as he did during the latter part of last season when he performed so admirably for the green and white. This was a fairly chippy game with both sides taking a host of minor penalties. The ModJacks got off on the wrong foot, taking a pair of minors early in the contest and they started the second period a man short for a full two minutes. The coach said throughout the pre-sea- son that he expected to see discipline on the ice -- staying away from the unneces- sary penalties. SLAPSHOTS: The MoJacks had eight "home brews" in the line-up for Sunday's game. They are Jeff Clarke, wearing the captain's C; Casey Van Schagen, Tom Chambers, Mike Morden, Adam Jones, Derek Tindal, Rob Murphy and Mike Heasman. Chambers and Heasman, along with Adam Bonneveld, are "alternate cap- tains.' Tindal and Morden are rookies on the squad this season and both came up through the ranks of Port Perry Minor Hockey. Another first year player is defenceman Andrew Boyle, a native of Renfrew, Ontario, in the heart of the Ottawa Valley where he played Junior B last year. The coaches and management liked the way Boyle worked in pre-season games and he was to play in Sunday's opener. Apparently, on his way back from Renfrew Sunday morning, he was delayed by an auto accident to which he was a witness. The club has had one sponsor during its 27-year history -- Mother Jackson's of Port Perry. Company general manager Dave Jackson dropped the ceremonial first puck to kick off the new season. And Kyffen Gaudet did a superb job with O' Canada. She's a member of the Scugog Choral Society. The acoustics in the Scugog Arena are less than perfect and Ms. Gaudet's voice handled them very nicely. The Bobcaygeon Bullets downed the Georgina Ice 5-4, despite being outshot 45-23. At one time, Ice had a 3-1 lead over the Bullets, who got some hot goaltending. Those same Bullets will be in Port Perry this coming Sunday at 7 p.m. § LAYLOM Associates ine, © ORT PERRY 803.635.4847 hn sume JOHN B. McCLELLAND / PORT PERRY STAR FACEOFF: For the 27th consecutive year, Port Perry's Mother Jackson's Open Kitchens has been the lone sponsor of the MoJacks. Company General Manager Dave Jackson dropped the first puck of the season for team captain's Ryan Gibson (Georgina) and Jeff Clarke. The MoJacks lost 6-2.
