The accused, including seven Scugog Township men, all appeared in front of provincial court Judge Hugh Campbell last Thursday (Sept. 24), and were remanded until Oct. 22. All of the men were present for their first appearance, and no one was held in custody. They were given time to get proper legal representation and for all information regarding the charges to be looked over. The men face charges in connection with a construction equipment theft ring that police estimate involved property worth more than $3 million. A joint investigation between Durham Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), dubbed "Project Digger", 'began in Scugog and spread to other parts of the province. Officers from the OPP's Provincial Auto Theft Team (PATT) executed 24 search warrants and recovered more than 40 pieces of machinery. Also seized were three restricted guns, including a fully automatic AK-47 assault rifle and two SKS military assault rifles, in pos- session of a Scugog man. Local search warrants were executed in July in Blackstock. Charged are: a Michael McCoy, 38, of Toronto, with 22 counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000; 1 Michael Baumchen, 31, McKee Rd. Blackstock, with six counts of possession of stolen property and nine weapons- related charges; a Richard Puckrin, 47, Regional Rd. 57, Blackstock, with five counts of pos- session of stolen property; 0 Ronald Robinson, 61, of Oshawa, two counts of possession of stolen prop- erty; a Warren Rohrer, 49, of View Lake, with two counts of possession of stolen property; a Jeff Wallace, 30, Edgerton Rd., Blackstock, one count of possession of stolen property; a Eric O'Brien; 38, of Fenelon Falls, one count of possession of stolen property; 0 Edward Jones, 47, of Oshawa, one count of possession of stolen property; a Edward Irwin, 39, Regional Rd. 3, Clarington, one count of possession of stolen property; a Valerie Gould, 40, of Edgerton Rd., Blackstock, with one count of possession of stolen property; a Clyde Brewster, 33, of Edgerton Rd. Blackstock, with one count of possession of stolen property. Due to inaccurate information provid- ed by the police, Wayne Malcolm, of Malcolm Rd. in Nestleton, was listed as 23 last week. Mr. Malcolm is 53. Chip trucks targets for break-ins, say police Chip trucks in the township continue to be a target for thieves, say Sometime between 11 p.m. on Sept. 21 and 8 a.m. on Sept. 22, Durham Police say thieves broke into a chip truck on Old Scugog Rd. in Blackstock by removing a window on the roof of the vehicle. Once inside they man- aged to steal a large quantity of meat and other food including ham- burger, hot dogs, chicken burgers and fingers, sausages, cheese sticks. Sometime between 8:10 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., police say someone forced their way through the front door of the home, breaking the lock. Cottage robbed Thieves stole a small television, some liquor and a little change during a break-in at a cottage at Colwell Circle.
