"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 14, 1998 - 13 By Chris Hall Port Perry Star As thick smoke quickly fills the small home and the fire alarm continues to beep away, Mike Carrey carefully helps more than 20 young children through a window and down a ladder to safety. Watching one nervously descend the ladder while helping another lift a leg over the window sill, the former firefighter issues comférting words to the other little ones remaining in the room. "It's okay, you'll be all right. It's your turn next," he says. Everyone in the small trail- er used as a mock home knows that the white billowing smoke and the heated locked door is simulated, but the children are still nervous, he explains. "They know that this isn't real, but at the same time to them it must seem scary," he said last week from the rear of S.A. Cawker Public School. Sponsored by Halifax Insurance, the Chief Life Line program Mr. Carrey brought to Port Perry last week is all about teaching children fire safety, and how to react in dangerous situations. "We want the kids to be safe at home; there are a lot of items in the home that can be dangerous and that's what we're trying to do here," he said. "We want to educate them in an environment where they can see what could actually happen," the former Welland firefighter said, indicating toasters, kettles and stoves as potential hazards. "They go in the house for about 20 minutes, I talk to them about what to look for and what to do in case of a fire, and then we sound the alarm and bring out 'We want the kids to be safe at home' instructor Mike Carrey says A lesson on living Unique teaching tool gives kids tips to help them survive fires the smoke. They check the door, feel that it is hot, and then we have them crawl out a window. "We have got a great response from the schools, students, teachers, parents... people like the fact kids are learning hands-on." The program is used across Canada, and is a key teaching element for the upcoming Fire Safety and Prevention Week, he says. "This program has been around for three years now and we're extremely busy, especially with the fire safety week coming up," said Mr. Carrey. "I think the kids really enjoy it, and we know they actually learn from it. We had a little girl in Bracebridge who went through the simu- lator and then that night her apartment caught on fire and she did everything just as we told her to." The Chief Life Line simulator was brought to Port Perry by Larry Emmerson, owner of Emmerson Insurance. "I received a flyer in the mail from Halifax Insurance and it gave a description of the program, and I knew it was close to Fire Prevention Week so I thought I'd go ahead and book it," he explained. * "I think it's a good program for the younger kids -- those in Grades 1,2, and 3 -- and it's a chance for us to give back to the community."
