Project would focus on township entrances Youth job plan is pitched here By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Young people could soon be at work on beautification projects in Scugog Township if a plan currently in the works comes to fruition. Jack Taylor, a director of the North Durham Teen Parents Committee, told members of the Blackstock Lions Club at a recent meeting that he's seeking funding and community support for the project, aimed at helping young people get a foot-hold in the work force. The committee, formed a couple of years ago in the community, has undertaken a number of initiatives aimed at helping support teen parents -- female and male -- and point them toward independence. They've successfully begun community kitchens, toy libraries and recreation programs. "But one thing that keeps nagging at us more than anything else is finding some sort of employment" for young people, Mr. Taylor told the Lions. He is currently lobbying local service clubs, busi- nesses and other organizations for support for a job. creation project that would see jobs created for "10 FORDER-PARKS INSURANCE BROKERS INC. The beautification project -- it was suggested by township council -- would see the young people working for up to 26 weeks on enhancing highway entrances to Scugog and other pro- jects, if possible. : Government funding would pay a coordinator's salary and a small wage to the young people, and cover some of the necessary safety-related equipment, said Mr. Taylor. Meanwhile, it's hoped that materials and other items can be obtained through donations. In addition, know-how is a resource that can be donated, he said: "We can always use people who have expertise." The committee hopes to run the project from March to September next year, said Mr. Taylor. The goal is to introduce young people to the job market, and open the door for their entry to full-time work. He's looking for letters of support from service clubs such as the Lions, and said committee directors hope to hear offers of support and advice from the community.
