Hudson said there were 15 officers on patrol in Scugog Saturday night, along with volunteers from other divisions and the Canine Unit. A paddy wagon was also on patrol. Plain clothes and uni- formed officers, including Inspector Chuck Mercier and Staff-Sgt. Mike Ewles, took time patrolling the area, added Sgt. Hudson. The only major distur- bances on Halloween night came north of town, he said. In the early evening hours, two fires were set in the Greenbank area on Cragg Rd. One blaze, built from construction materials, was set on the west side of Hwy. 12, across from the ceme- tery. The other major incident attended by Durham Police was in Saintfield, where a 1992 Volkswagen was dam- aged on Jacobsen Blvd. Police say sometime overnight between Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 vandals smashed the car's wind- shield with a pumpkin, spread thick grease on the car doors and side of the house and put a dead piglet on the front seat of the car. 'Devil's Night' busy The night prior to Halloween, known as Devil's Night, kept local police officers busy, howev- er. a Durham Regional Police report that sometime between 9 and 10 p.m. van- dals smashed the glass in the lower half of a door at Port Perry High School. A custodian noticed the damage and reported it to the police. No entry was gained and damage is esti- mated at $100. Police were also called to three addresses on Oct. 30 after vandals slashed a number of tires. a The two passenger- side tires were slashed on a two-door brown 1981 Pontiac Parisienne that parked behind Brock's Store on a All four tires were also slashed on a two-door white 1989 Ford Escort between 8:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. The Escort was parked in the northwest corner of the liquor store at the cor- ner of Mary and Perry Streets. a And Police were called to the rear of a Water St. residence after vandals slashed all four tires on a brown 1984 Pontiac GST on Nov. 1 between midnight and 10 a.m. Damage 1s estimated to be around $400. Brazen thief steals VCR A brazen thief walked into an Ash St. seniors' complex sometime between 5 and 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 28 and stole a television and VCR, report police. During that time frame, Durham Police say, someone entered the building and went into the lounge room where they stole the electronic equipment and exited through a sliding glass door. They also tried to force open a office door, police add. . Residents at the com- plex report seeing a strange red Ford pickup with white stripes parked in the driveway that night.
