"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 10, 1998 - 5 Annual citrus sale helps fund music program By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Music students at Port Perry High School are once again offering local resi- dents a little taste of Florida. For almost 20 years now the students have been holding the sale as a fundraiser for their music program, says Charles White, head instructor at the PPHS music department. "We're going ahead with the fundraiser again this year. The kids are extremely dedicated to working on this and it has become an important part of their year, and to our department," Mr. White said last week. The annual sale, which began on Oct. 30 and will run until Nov. 23, has under- gone some minor changes since last year's fundraiser. "We're still offering naval oranges, red grapefruit and tangelos, but we've got 10- pound boxes of tangerines, which are new this year," said Mr. White. "Their sales were going well in other schools so we thought we'd try it in our market and so far we've gotten a good response." One thing customers will notice during this year's sale is higher prices. "They're up a little this year. There's the Canadian and American dollar to factor in and we're a little disappointed," said Mr. White. "We've been able to hold the prices for the last five years." usually averages out to about $5,000 after costs -- goes directly into the music depart- ment's budget to cover the costs of festival fees and transportation costs, said Mr. White, noting that the school sends stu- dents to more than a dozen events each year. "The money is put to good use, we think. Whatever is not spent on festivals we put toward instruments and other materials." Over the years the department has purchased a new valve trombone, elec- tronic tuner, electric keyboards, two drum sets, a bass and piano amplifier, as well as the sound system for the Jazzmerize group and other instruments. "We appreciate the ongoing support from the community with this," said Mr. White. "We have a steady base of customers over the years and they've helped make the music program here so successful." Twenty-pound boxes of naval oranges and tangelos are both available for $21 while 40-pound boxes of each will be sold for $34. A 20-pound case of red grapefruit is available for $19 and a 40-pound box will be sold for $31. The new 10-pound box of tangerines will be sold for $20. You may give your order to any PPHS music student or call the department at 985-9034 and leave a message.
