The letter was written as a way of saying thanks to the merchant, who has taken the trou- NJ p : ble to recognize the day. The store wasn't the . We have sunk into the enviable complacency that comes with extended peace. Never again will we see a time during which conscription occurs; we will not see another generation as profoundly affected by war as those who endured the conflicts entered by Canada this century. But we must keep Remembrance Day. If nothing else, we can consider observance a tiny installment on the huge debt we owe. Many of us cannot fathom a world at war, or the mag- nitude of the loss endured by families and com- munities... but we should try. Who carries on remembrance when they are too few and too frail to do so? That's right. And it's more than merely paying our respects. The act of remembrance is one of recognition, and resolution. We resolve to respect the legacy of The Wars, and to protect the way of life that was earned at such a cost. And we should resolve to act swiftly and with unity when we see an infringement on human rights and dignity, anywhere in the world. To the Editor: sacrifice in war and peace. Having witnessed the final resting place of a great many Canadian war dead, I cannot help but become emotional at this time of year as another Remembrance Day is upon us. It is our time, as a nation, to collectively pause and remember Canada's painful legacy of They number more than 110,000 and rest within manicured Commonwealth War Cemeteries in 70 countries of the world. The family inscriptions on the headstones would touch the coldest heart. "Death divides but memory clings from dear wife and four children," "Oh how we We have entrusted their care to a group of warm and gentle souls, who as garden- ers, understand the significance of their surroundings. Within these sanctuaries, the fortunate fallen rest in their dark and silent graves, half a world away from home. For tens of thousands of our native sons, they were never found and, as such, were not afforded the simple dignity of a traditional grave. They will be forever "Known Unto God." It is hard to believe that each headstone represents a grieving family. One must imagine the children that would grow up without the care and guidance of a loving father.
