8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 10, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Seniors' annual bazaar a boost for memorial By Marion Lee The Port Perry Senior Citizen's Annual Bazaar was held on Saturday, Oct. 17 and the seniors were pleased that the partic- ipation and proceeds were greatly increased over last year. There were special tables to exhibit hand made quilts, baked goods, crafts, Christmas decorations and White Elephant items. An added feature this year was the inclu- sion of crafting done by the wood carvers. The wood carvers had over 100 finely crafted items on display. Donations were received from members who were unable to contribute in other ways. The eight person Food Services Committee served an excellent luncheon to more than 100 guests. All diners had a free draw for special bas- kets. The winners were Alana Kennedy and Joyce Ward. For the children's free draw the winner was Rachael Baldwin. A major fundraiser involved the production of two quilts and one set of matching pillows. This project, which involved a great deal of work over the past year, was managed by Marion Lee with the help of six other ladies. Mayor Moffat was on hand and drew the tick- ets for the lucky win- ners. The winners were Linda Parry of Port Perry and Ed Naylor of Whitby. The proceeds from this special project con- tinue the support of the Remembrance Garden at the local hospital. Several hospital repre- sentatives were on hand to express their appre- ciation of these contin- ued donations. There's sure to be some- thing for everyone and every kind of budget. Action commences in the church auditorium at 11 a.m., when the silent auc- tion begins. This event includes gift certificates for restaurants and services in Port Perry and area, wooden lawn ornaments, 450 litres of oil, a half-load of topsoil and a wooden checker board. Home baking, a hall mirror, Canadian flag, hall lamp, gift baskets, dinner for six and knitted items are also many of the qual- ity items included in the silent auction. A light lunch, including delicious bowls of soup will be offered between 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The gavel comes to life at 1 p.m. when auctioneer Neil Bacon starts the live auction. "It's expected the bid- ding will be fast and furi- ous," chairman Ted Griffen said. Proceeds from the day's events will go towards three efforts currently being undertaken by the church. The congregation has committed funds towards its New Beginnings pro- ject, which includes out- reach projects for First Nations people in Canada and, more locally, the St. Vincent's Soup Kitchen in Oshawa. The New Beginnings project started two years ago when the Port Perry United Church and its sis- ter chapel in Prince Albert Lake Scugog Lumber show off the 'baby' barn that's to be sponsored a Bosnian refugee family for a year. Because of the church's outreach work the Samardzic family (Milenko, Rose, Igor and Bojan) were able to flee their war-torn country and start what has been a suc- cessful life in Canada. Other funds will go towards the Christian Education Committee's nursery renovations, and also help pay for ongoing repairs over the past month to the huge stained glass window at the front of the church.
