The ban stems from warnings received that laser pointers may cause eye damage. In fact, two teachers in Durham have been temporarily blinded by the devices after having them flashed in their eyes, the board reported. Neither teacher suffered permanent damage, but the potential for harm has caused the board to impose the ban. Laser pointers have become a pop- ular toy for young people. Price reduc- tions mean that they are becoming widely accessible for many students. The light energy that laser pointers can aim into the eye can be more dan- gerous than staring directly into the sun. Federal law requires a warning on the product label about the poten- tial hazard to eyes. Momentary exposure to laser point- er beam, even from an inadvertent sweep across a person's eyes, may cause temporary flash blindness. School administrators have been asked to incorporate the ban of laser pointers into their school's code of behaviour and outline the conse- quence of their use to students. Students who have been adequate- ly informed of the ban on the laser pointers and who bring them onto board property may be suspended in | accordance with the Education Act.
