"If the trustees do not make a decision on the matter before Dec. 31, this board stands to lose $5 million in funding and with it all the plans to give students better facilities," he said. Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew urged her colleagues not to waste the opportu- nity to collect the $5 mil- lion in funding, which is essential for the library project here, and other projects across the region. "We have had six months and 13 meetings on this matter, but if some trustees need more time for questions then let's wait and let the questions be asked," she said. "But let us not wait too long on this. "If we see the deadline for this proposal come and go, we must be prepared to be accountable for losing $5 million in much needed funding that this board cannot replace." Mrs. Drew is worried that cancellation of all or some of the accommoda- tion plan will have a neg- ative effect outside the Oshawa area. "If the plan is canceled, the new library and music facilities at Port Perry High School will be in very real jeopardy," she said later. Mrs. Schedlich said that if the plan is not implemented, "many stu- dents in the region will remain in overcrowded and technically disadvan- taged schools." During the vote to delay the plan for further study, the crowd, which included most of the city and region- al councillors for Oshawa, called on the board to scrap the plan altogether. The crowd, most of whom left as soon as the business pertaining to pos- sible closures was over, vowed to return and fight the plan. Gavin Stanley of Port Perry, one of two students who sit on the board in an advisory capacity, spoke to the audience from a stu- dent's perspective. "I have heard from the crowd that they want their concerns about their schools addressed," he said. "For myself, and from the other side, I want and need the improvements promised for my school, and what's more, I deserve those improvements to be made."
