18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 24, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Township abandons talks for new municipal building By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Scugog Township will cease negoti- ations to purchase a building for new township administration offices. The price was just too high, coun- cillors decided at their meeting Monday afternoon. Township staff had been negotiating for the Old Port Marketing building at the corner of Reach St. and Old Simcoe Rd. in Port Perry. It would have cost about $2.5 million to buy the building and do all the nec- essary renovations to convert it into an administrative centre with council chambers. Following council's decision not to continue with plans to buy that build- ing, township CEO Earl Cuddie said the search for a new administrative facility is back to square one. There is a possibility the council may consider renovating the existing building on Perry St. to create new office space where the council cham- bers are now located, and put an addi- tion on for a new chambers for council and committee meetings. Meanwhile, the township finance committee on Monday morning approved a transfer of $100,000 from the municipal reserves into an account designated for financing a new admin- istration building. The $16,000 the township has already spent on its search for a new building will come from that sum. $450,000 transferred from municipal projects reserve to finance a variety of municipal endeavours. Included is $110,000 towards a new fire hall or renovating existing halls; $35,000 for roads equipment, $78,000 to reduce future borrowing; $30,500 for capital purchases for the parks department; $15,000 to help finance the municipal election in two years; and $15,000 to finance street light crossing signs in 1998. The $100,000 was part of about Not all members in favour of project Council votes to continue lake dredging Dredging Lake Scugog around the public boat launch area will continue for another 12 days this fall, at a cost of $24,000. Scugog council voted to pay for the additional work at the meeting Monday afternoon. However, the vote was not unanimous as councillors Dave Dietlein (Ward 4) and Keith Bacon (Ward 1) were opposed. The township has already spent $30,000 for dredging to deepen the channel area from the launch site to the navigation channel. The extra dredging will be in the area where boats "stage" before they are taken from the water. The lake is only about 12 inches deep in this area in some places, and this was causing boaters all kinds of trouble over the summer months. Story ideas? Call T!
