The plan to close schools deemed redundant by the board and gain $5 million in provincial grants towards new schools and renovations is the formula upon which the pro- posed additions to Port Perry High School depend, according to board planners. The vote needed to accept the Durham District School Boards "System Wide Accommodation and Improvement Plan" was postponed until at least Nov. 30. The decision to delay the plan came after a marathon five-hour board meeting which saw angry parents from at least two of the Oshawa schools slated for closure shout obscenities and cat-calls at the trustees. The extraordinary meeting also saw Oshawa Mayor Nancy Diamond tell trustees, "Your school plan for Oshawa stinks." Trustees voted in favour of a motion by Oshawa trustee Jane Weist to rethink the plan, and ask board staff for alternatives to school closures. During an extended public question period, board chair Ruth-Anne Schedlich had to call for order and sound her gavel so many times that the small wooden instrument of office eventually broke. One mother, angry at the proposed closure of Central Collegiate Institute -- a facility that the board says is under used and too expensive to renovate --shouted her rage at Continued on page 17 Investigation into death continues By Chris Hall Port Perry Star A Claremont man charged with causing a fatal crash during a pursuit with Durham Police may not have known he was being followed by cruisers at the time of the accident, say police. David Franklin Doerfler, 35, who appeared in an Oshawa court room for bail last Thursday, was charged with one count of criminal negligence causing death and one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm in relation to the death of John Michael Gibbons, 47, and injury to his wife, Lorna, 35, who survived the Nov. 15 accident. The bail hearing did not occur, and Mr. Doerfler is scheduled to make another appearance today.
