Choral Society show continues this weekend Musical rings in the season By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star Throughout the world, there's hardly a person who has never heard of Ebeneezer Scrooge. The old tightwad, who was originally introduced to the world 150 years ago when Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol, comes to life again at Town Hall 1873. It's here where The Scugog Choral Society delights its audience with the familiar story about Ebeneezer Scrooge, whose only word for Christmas 1s "Humbug!" A man with a heart as cold as ice, Scrooge has no friends and thinks Christmas is for fools and swindlers. "Only a world of fools celebrate Christmas," the old miser says. "All it does 1s make you poor." Since he was a young boy Scrooge has always been obsessed with mak- ing money. But as the years go by and he grows richer, the more grouchy and unhappy he becomes. Even his nephew tries to persuade his tight uncle that Christmas is a time for giving and opening up of our hearts. Can Scrooge be per- suaded to change his tune? Do the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet To Come cause him to have a change of heart? Country Friends' ANNUAL CHRISTMAS SHOW s SALE » Zak Church is Scrooge and Andy Sanchez is Tiny Tim in Choral Society's A Christmas Carol. You can find out by attending the Choral soci- ety's A Christmas Carol on the evenings of Nov. 26, 27, 28 and December 3,4 and 5, starting at 8 p.m. A matinee perfor- mance is being held November 29 at 2 p.m. Reserved seating tick- ets are available now at Henshalls, 241 Queen Street, for $15 each (which includes a $2 surcharge that goes towards Town Hall improvements). Dinner packages are also available. A special menu has been provided by The Front Porch which includes appetizer and dessert for a total dinner/theater package price of $35 per person. These package tickets are also available at Henshalls. The show opened last Thursday, Nov. 19. Scrooge is splendidly portrayed by Zak Church, a newcomer to the Scugog Choral Society, but no stranger to the stage. He is supported by Rick Huntington as Cratchit, Walter Bone as Jacob Marley, Ryan Edgar as Fred, Andy Sanchez as Tiny Tim and a cast and chorus of over 30. The acting and singing are the usual perfection we have all come to expect with the Scugog Choral Society. The sound effects are so real, the audience can actually feel Scrooge's terror when the three ghosts come to haunt him on Christmas Eve. Produced by Michele Jones and Alice Lee, A Christmas Carol is direct- ed by Thea Award winners Nina Foxall and Barbara Oulette, and is chore- ographed by Barbara Taylor-Bone. Don't be a humbug; make A Christmas Carol part of your merriment as you begin the Christmas season.
