Mrs. Lorenza McArthur, long time resident with her late husband who was the village doctor, and recently resident of a Peterborough Nursing Home, passed away last week. Sympathy is extend- ed to her family, Jessie and Norm Dysart of Peterborough, Betty McArthur and Ardis McArthur both of Toronto and her three grandsons. The funeral was held last Friday. On Saturday evening Tom Horton passed away after a lengthy illness. His funeral will be Tuesday afternoon at Waggs Funeral Chapel. Sympathy is extended to Marg, his wife of over 50 years, his two daughters Joan (Mrs.Ralph Swain) and Jean, and sons Wayne, Dave, Bob, Brian and Lennie. On Friday evening the Christmas Variety Night pre- sented by "A Touch of Country" and their guests was a great success. The guests who assist- ed with the program were Bunty Webb, Dave Wotten, Highland dancers - Megan Foote and Jennifer Graham. Herb Vine and the Pigeon Creek Trio - Jean McMahon, Ruth Jennings and Perry Grandel. Another delightful evening of Christmas music was the community carol sing held at the United Church on Sunday evening. Partieipating in the program were the high school Junior Concert Band under the direction of John Beirness. The Senior Choir of the St. John's Anglican Church and the Blackstock United as well as much congregational carol singing. The evening concluded with refreshments and a social time. When you are planning your Christmas holiday activities please include thoughts of the Snowflake Curling Bonspiel which will be held at the local arena on Tuesday, Dec. 29 dur- ing the day. This bonspiel is geared for families of all ages for some fun and activity together following too much feasting of Christmas. Larry Hoskin of Lake Louise, Alberta spent a few days in the area visiting his mother Muriel Hoskin of Port Perry, and various friends and relatives. The name of the late Roy McLaughlin of Nestleton has been inducted into The Ontario Horseshoe Hall of Fame. Roy earned this award when he played in the A class in the Canadian Men's Championship at the C.N.E. in the 1970s. Roy was one of 14 added at an Induction Service on Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Horseshoe Hall of Fame, in the Khaki Club Wellesly, Ont. Edith has received a beautiful plaque that reads: "Roy McLaughlin Inducted Into Ontario Horseshoe Hall of Fame 1998" Isn't it such a shame that so many of these very deserving honours are left to be presented until the recipient is no longer here to appreciate it? What a proud time for Edith and their family. The annual Cartwright School Christmas Concert will be held the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 15 at the C.C.P.S. I attended our monthly meeting this past Sunday with an update on finance, rentals, and needed repairs. The euchre nights are growing and half of the tickets for the New Year's Eve party are sold. Lots of door prizes are coming. Lake Scugog Historical Society The next most important function is the Christmas Carol Service at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13 at the Head Church on the Island. Come out and see what the dress was for the 1880 and 90s. They tell me one short verse of one of the carols will be sung in Early French. A great evening is planned. Pine Ridge Garden Club We wound up the business of the club last Tuesday night for this year with the usual great feast of a pot luck supper. Following this we had the retiring offi- cers giving short speeches of the experi- ences and delight in serving the club along with thanking those who assisted them. The newly elected officers gave their thanks on their election and accepted the challenge which lies ahead. The following are our new executive: President - Angela Willis, 1st Vice President - Shirley Love, 2nd Vice President - Pat Kingstone, Treasurer - Rie Hoogeveen, Secretary - Fran Binns. Plus a slate of 10 directors who will be working hard over the next 12 weeks getting everything lined up towards a successful 1999. The largest job is getting a program together for the whole year which lies ahead for the year book. This must be ready for the March 2 meeting which is our first of the new year. Blackstock Lions Club We had a wonderful Christmas party last Saturday night at Nestleton Hall. A beautiful turkey dinner followed by Christmas carols by the Sweet Adelines from Uxbridge area. I think the most fun was receiving a wrapped Christmas gift for each one attending. It was made into a game and there was lots of laugh- ter. Following this we sat around in a circle and sang Christmas carols. Next meeting, Wednesday, Dec. 16. Speaker: Glenn Peast on the subject of that wonderful Lion's Camp Kirk. Scugog Firefighters Last Saturday I attended the Firefighters Turkey Roll. From the gen- eral surveillance I'd say everyone had a good time.
