| "A Family Tradition for 132 Years" La Ea PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 8, 1998 - 23 SPC i SIDI IES MY MAY £ POR ORTS Legion squad takes Cobourg tourney crown The Port Perry Predators Peewee No. 1 team competed against 12 other teams in the Cobourg Invitational Tournament the weekend of Nov. 27 to 29. The Port Predators started things off on Friday night against a team from Weston. The boys were flying and after a period of "testing the waters" and scoring a single goal, they added three more in each of the next two periods to come away with a 7-0 victory over the Blackhawks. Alex Nicolaou got the shutout for Port, Chet Martin got the hat trick for the local crew with singles to Ryan Petch, Justin Shinn, Ryan Hnatko and Tyson Savage. Picking up assists were Jesse Mischtian and Keenan Geer with three each, Ryan Hnatko with two and singles going to Jeff Talmey and Kevin Robins. Saturday morning came early but the boys responded quickly as they did the night before. Port opened the scoring against Pickering after only 30 seconds with Geer from Mischtian which got the boys into the game. In the second, Savage from Shinn and then Martin from Savage and Geer rounded out the scoring. Goalie Kurtis Wagar pre- served the shutout against a good Pickering team. Port gets full marks for a 3-0 victory. Later on Saturday, after relaxing at the bowling alley, the boys faced the Lindsay Muskies. This was a tough game which required the boys to refocus. In the first, Shinn from Geer and Jeff Tomcheski opened the scoring. Lindsay tied it in the sec- ond on the first goal Port allowed in the tournament and we suddenly realized we were in a game. Just 47 seconds later Shinn got his sec- ond of the game from Robins. In the third, Port buried Lindsay by scoring four times, Shinn got his third of the game and Martin, with two, and Robins rounded out the scoring. Picking up the helpers were Talmey, Jordan Froats, Petch, Shinn, Martin and Hnatko. These three victories got Port into the semi final against an unde- feated Keswick team. Port scored twice in the opening frame, Shinn from Pat Lewis and Hnatko, and Robins from Shinn. In the second, Hnatko with a blast from the point assisted by Shinn, left the score at the end of the second 3-0 for Port. In the third Froats with another blast from the point assisted by Petch and Mischtian, and an unas- sisted goal by Martin, rounded out the scoring. A meaningless goal late in the third by Keswick stole the shutout from Wagar, but the boys waltzed into the final against an undefeated Cobourg team with a 5-1 victory. Despite some questionable and mysterious scheduling changes for the final, Port knew their work was cut out for them against a Cobourg team they had not yet beaten in regular season play and who are sitting in first place in the league. The game was everything it promised to be with thrilling end to end action. Nicoloau was superb in net and the Port boys had the edge in play but were unable to score until halfway through®the game. Martin on a shot from just inside the blue line, assisted by Tomcheski, opened the scoring and sent the Port fans into delirium. The second ended with Port up 1-0. The third provided more end to end excitement and fantastic saves at both ends of the ice, but things were not decided until Froats blast- ed the puck down the ice into an empty net with eight seconds left, to seal Cobourg's fate. In fact, Crawford, a veteran Jr. C goalie, drew words of praise from coach Thernbury for his pérfor- mance. Last Tuesday night in Lakefield, the MoJacks spotted the Chiefs a 4-0 lead and when they finally started to score in the third period, it was just not enough. Bonneveld, Adam Metheral and Keith Bloehm did the damage on the score-sheet with Mike Strutt chip- ping in with a pair of assists. But the Chiefs added a late insurance marker on a power play to make the final 5-3. SLAPSHOTS: The Modacks have been short-staffed lately due to injuries and other factors. Ryan Odette, a big, strong forward who can put the puck in the net, has left the team due to commitments of a new job. Tom Chambers remains out with a shoulder injury. Matt Glen returned to action after missing several games with a shoulder injury as well. The ModJacks will have three newcomers out to practice this Tuesday evening (two forwards and one blue liner). Coach Thornbury said any player signed to the roster from here on must be what he called an "impact" player -- capable of making an immediate contribution to the club. The team has a tough schedule this month with ten games. This coming Friday they are in Uxbridge for a 7:45 start, and Sunday, host the Bobcaygeon Bullets with faceoff at 7 p.m. A pair of wins would go a long way in getting the coaching staff in the festive spirit. In other recent league action, Little Britain and Lakefield tied 5-5 Saturday night and the Bruins bounced Bobcaygeon 8-1 on Friday.
