8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 8, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Guides' 'Energizer Bunny' keeps going and Local leader Bunny Rowland receives Girl Guides' highest honour for her dedication to the movement By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star In the 50 years Guiding has been in Port Perry, the prestigious Gold Merit Award has been awarded just once. Last month at the Ontario Division dinner meet- ing, Port Perry District Commissioner Bunny Rowland received the Gold Merit Award. It is given to an adult member who has given outstanding ser- vice to Guiding in any field beyond the basic require- ments for the position held. Mrs. Rowland knew she was going to receive her 20-year pin, but the other award caught her com- pletely off guard. "That was a total surprise. To be recommended by my peers is a real honour," she said. District Commissioner Annette Carr who pre- sented Mrs. Rowland with the award, said Bunny's enthusiasm is admired by all. "She's very committed to Guiding, always lending a hand. Having worked within three units -- local, division and provincial -- Bunny is always there for everyone," she said. "She's our 'Energizer Bunny' and we hope her battery keeps her in Guiding for many more years." Mrs. Rowland's career in Guiding, which began in 1978, started like most: "My daughters came home from Brownies saying there was an urgent need for leaders," she recalled. "I didn't want to see the unit fold, so took up the challenge." The next year she advanced to Brown Owl, a position she retained for the next nine years. In 1988 Mrs. Rowland acquired the position of Assistant Secretary on the provincial council, serving eight months in the position. Always striving to do more, Mrs. Rowland held the position of Division International Adviser and Provincial Secretary from September 1988 to July 1992. In her role as international adviser Mrs. Rowland traveled to various Guide and Pathfinder units, teaching the girls how to apply for international trips. "The more these girls knew about applying, the better their chances were of being accepted," she said. No stranger to travel, in 1991 Mrs. Rowland helped chaperone a guide camping event in England, and also attended other international events in Scotland that summer. In 1994 she participated in a weekend Scouting event with Girl Guides and their leaders in Georgia. Although international adviser is not an official role anymore, Mrs. Rowland still promotes travel opportunities among Guiding members. In September of 1990 Bev Dawson and Mrs. Rowland began the first Sparks group in Port Perry, a role she continues to enjoy today. And in May of 1996 Mrs. Rowland became?a Girl Guide music trainer for Central Area. "Every year there are provincial challenges in music. I teach the girls songs from a given list so they can earn their provincial challenge badge," she explained. In 1997 Mrs. Rowland became Port Perry District Commissioner, a position she still holds. She also serves as a Sparks leader and a Girl Guide music trainer. Her involvement with Guiding is strictly volunteer. "I like working with the girls," said Mrs. Rowland. "And I plan on being around for a few more years yet." highest honour, the Gold Merit Award.
