Si Ec iii NS mr coin oe LA ------ "A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 15, 1998 - 23 ModJacks grab three points in weekend action From page 21 made it 3-2 with assists to Keith Blohm and Rob Murphy. Early in the third, sniper Adam Bonneveld, who had a productive weekend on the scoresheet, chipped a shot over Randy Crawford to pull the MoJacks into a 3-3 tie. And Bonneveld was instrumental in Jason Hansen's goal at 9:55 that gave them a short- lived 4-3 lead. He out-legged a Bruin defenseman to a loose puck deep in the Uxbridge zone and fed a pass to Hansen. The MoJacks were killing off a penalty at the time. Jim Mitchell evened the score 4-4 at 15:31 and then Hansen scored what should have been the win- ner at 18:03 when he batted a flying puck out of the air, But the Bruins Stu Parish -- their leading scorer and a threat any time he's on the ice -- knotted it at 5-5 with 1:06 left. In the overtime, Geoff Hodginson got credit for the winner. He fired at the open net from well inside his own blue line. Ben Jillard got a start in nets for the MoJacks and turned in a solid effort against the Bruins who have all kinds of scoring punch. The ModJacks had their chances to win this one, but the power play went south, especially in the first when they had a two-man advantage on a couple of occasions and failed to get even a decent scoring threat. They allowed the Bruins a short- handed goal and got two of their own. Against Bobcaygeon, Jeff Mackie earned his sec- ond shut-out of the campaign (his first was against Uxbridge, 3-0, exactly four weeks ago) as the ModJacks broke open a close affair in the third period with three goals in less than a minute. And, Mackie got a measure of revenge as he was pulled the last time the teams hooked up. Hansen in the second period and Bonneveld early in the third had given the MoJacks a 2-0 lead. But the game was still very much up for grabs at 9:54 when Bonneveld netted his second off a pass from Murphy. His shot was a bit of a floater that appeared to drop suddenly in front of netminder Jarrett Rowden and then squirted between his pads. That seemed to un-nerve Rowden, and a few min- utes later, the MoJacks struck hard for three quick ones that salted this one away. Mike Strutt pumped in a rebound at 14:23, fol- lowed by Bonneveld with the hat trick at 14:52 and then at 15:12, Dale Drummond made it 6-0 with Murphy getting his second assist of the period. Drummond has been having nothing but back luck around the net, hitting posts and cross bars with alarming frequency. Perhaps this goal will alter his fortunes and if it does, opposing netminders are going to spend a lot of time fishing rubber out of the mesh. The ModJacks really took charge in the final period of this game, playing with as much poise and confidence at any point this season. Injuries continue to dog the team to no end. Mike Heasman missed the weekend games with a shoulder problem. And Matt Glenn, just returned to action after a shoulder injury, took several stitches in the forehead after being elbowed in the Uxbridge game. He may have a slight concussion, and was very groggy while being helped off the ice. Tom Chambers is still on the shelf and Casey Van Schagen sat out a two-game suspension. Mike Clark joined the roster from Oshawa where he played AA midget last season. He's a forward with good puck-handling abilities and saw his first game against the Bruins on Friday. He'll need a few games to find his skating legs and the coaching staff expect he will make a positive two-way contribution. GM Murray Parliament said two additional play- ers have been invited to practise this week. SLAPSHOTS: This is a highly crucial week for the ModJacks -- one that could have "make or break" consequences, as they have three games in as many nights. They are in Bobcaygeon Friday, Georgina Saturday and host Lakefield Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Coach Thornbury said that based on the way his troops performed this past weekend, there is no reason why they can't put three W's on the board. Having just passed the mid-point (19 games left of 40) coach Thornbury says he's confident the ModJacks will turn things around in the second half. Taking six points this coming weekend would be a great way to start, he said. In fact, he believes the team has lots of time to take a good run at second place Lakefield. The ModJacks fans note that Sunday's game against Lakefield is the annual "CHRISTMAS GALA." Santa will be on hand with a bag full of spe- | cial draws for excellent prizes for kids and adults. | And he'll be handing out goodies to the youngsters. Why not make it a family outing -- enjoy some fine Junior C hockey entertainment and a pre- Christmas get-together with jolly Saint Nick. The ModJacks will host the annual All-Star Game January 9 as the best from this League will take on the Stars from the Eastern Jr. C League at the Scugog Arena. ModJack coaches Tom Thornbury, Scott Pinkerton and Sam Thornbury will handle duties behind the bench. On Jan. 10, the two teams will play a return engagement in Frontenac. Each team will send three reps to the game and the coaches fill out the roster with their selections. Game time at the Scugog Arena is still to be announced.
