John and Roz Wordley of Port Perry went to a CBC reading of the famous story in Toronto two years ago. This presentation of the well known story of Scrooge, Bob Cratchet and Tiny Tim was the brainchild of Judy Maddren, who currently reads the national news on CBC Radio every weekday morning, as well as presenting the religious cur- rent affairs show "Tapestry". Ms Maddren is married to an Anglican Minister and the production was put on at their church, Christ Church Deer Park. Judy has been run- ning annual productions since 1990 with all the proceeds going to local foodbanks. On the drive home the Wordleys talked about what a magical evening it had been and how a production in Port Perry would be a perfect family event for Christmas. From that idea they contacted Ms Maddren at the CBC and found that over 25 productions were running across Canada in 1997. She supplied the Wordleys with a copy of the five-part script and a very useful set of "how to" production notes. The Wordleys staged the production at The United Church last December with all the proceeds going to Operation Scugog. This year all proceeds will be going to the Central Seven Association for Community Living, which provides services for developmentally challenged people in Uxbridge, Port Perry and Brock Township When it came to choosing five readers they drew up a shortlist of local people they knew who would make good "sto- rytellers". It was while discussing this aspect of the production with Judy Maddren that she mentioned two of her CBC colleagues lived locally, and she thought they would love to take part. Ted Barris, who frequently hosts the CBC Metro Morning & Ontario Morning shows, lives in Uxbridge. Dan Karpenchuk, a CBC news producer and reporter, recently moved to Port Perry. Both agreed to read. Other well known local readers for this year's production in Uxbridge are Bunty Webb of the Borelians Theatre Group, Susan Reed, a native of Uxbridge and formerly the librarian at S.A.Cawker public school, and Charles Wyszkowski, a Port Perry High School teacher and a veteran MC of the PPHS annual commencement ceremony. The five-part reading is an original adaptation of the novel used by Dickens himself in performances "on the road" around Great Britain in the mid 1800's. The readings are interspersed with music provided this year by a Nancy ising, a good friend of the Wordleys. She is a professional singing teacher living in Newcastle where her husband David is the United Church Minister. She has given numerous recitals includ- ing performances with Symphony Nova Scotia. She continues her studies in New York. This year the production is at St Paul's Anglican Church at 7.30pm Saturday, Dec. 19. Tickets are $10 and can be obtained from the church office; Presents Presents Presents, or Blue Heron in Uxbridge or calling the Wordleys on 985 9303. .
