Durham officers cleared in SIU's probe of crash By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Durham Regional Police offi- cers involved in a pursuit that led to the death of an Oshawa man Nov. 15 will not face any charges, reports the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). . In a statement released last Friday (Dec18); the STU = which "investigates any civilian death or serious injury involving police action -- cleared three Durham Regional Police officers of any charges related to the pursuit. "Acting SIU director Leslie Chapin determined that there was no evidence to warrant charges against the two subject officers and one witness officer, who work out of 26 Division in Port Perry. She also said that the Durham officers correctly followed the Provincial Standards on Motor Vehicle Pursuits. The SIU learned that the driv- er of the truck which caused the fatal accident was travelling at a high rate of speed with its headlights off. John Michael Gibbons, a 47- year-old Oshawa man, was killed shortly before 2 a.m. on Nov. 15 when a 1997 Ford Ranger, which was westbound on Hwy. 7A, ran a red light at the Manchester intersection of Hwys. 12 and 7A and broadsided his southbound 1986 Cadillac. Mr. Gibbons was transported to Lakeridge Health Port Perry where he died of his injuries. His wife, Lorna, was also taken to hospital where she was treated and released. As a result of the accident, David Franklin Doerfler, a 35- year-old Claremont man, has been charged by the Ontario Provincial Police with one count of criminal negligence causing death and one count of criminal negligence causing injury. He also faces one count of breach of probation, one count of possession of a controlled sub- stance, and one count of criminal harassment by Durham Police.
