John Beirness, long- time leader of Cartwright High School's world-class music program, was given the Bruce Mather Award last Wednesday during the annual CHS dinner for seniors. Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew was on hand along with Durham District School Board past-chair Ruth-Anne Schedlich, to present Mr. Beirness with a plaque and a small honorarium. Mrs. Drew had high praise for Mr. Beirness: "He is the music pro- gram at this school. He 1s a fine teacher and his dedication to his pro- gram, his students and this community have been an on-going part of his life since I have known him." /eekend Star will pu | December 24th. Mr. Beirness was hes- itant to take all the cred- it for the prestigious honour. "This award is for this school; this school lives and breathes communi- ty, and cannot function without it," he said. "This is a total com- munity effort," said Mr. Beirness. "I'm very grateful for the last 10 years, being given to do what I do, because no where else could I do what I do." Mr. Beirness then turned to the orchestra of students behind him, raised his baton, and, as a room full of people watched, did what he does best: he made music. Cartwright High School music teacher John Beirness was congratulated by Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew (centre) and Durham District School Board chair Ruth Anne Schedlich last week when he was named recipient of the Bruce Mather Award.
