John Beirness, long- time leader of Cartwright High School's world-class music program, was given the Bruce Mather Award last Wednesday during the annual CHS dinner for seniors. Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew was on hand along with Durham District School Board past-chair Ruth-Anne Schedlich, to present Mr. Beirness with a plaque and a small honorarium. Mrs. Drew had high praise for Mr. Beirness: "He is the music pro- gram at this school. "This is a total com- munity effort," said Mr. Beirness. "I'm very grateful for the last 10 years, being given to do what I do, because no where else could I do what I do." Mr. Beirness then turned to the orchestra of students behind him, raised his baton, and, as a room full of people watched, did what he does best: he made music.
