Details of the incident were sketchy at press time, but infor- mation released indicated that police were at a home in Brock Township to make an arrest when the shots were fired. Dead is a 44-year-old man who neighbours say was a resi- dent of the home, on Sideroad 17 near Sunderland. He was shot three times in the abdomen. His 17-year-old son was also hit in the abdomen, but survived. A York Regional Police officer, who was accompanied by Durham Police Constables, sus- tained a facial injury when he was grazed by a bullet. The Special Investigations Unit has been called in to inves- tigate the incident. For more on the story, and pictures from the scene, please ~ turn to page 8 of today's Star. Photos and Story on Page 8 GTSB and taxes on Moffatt's agenda By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Scugog Township councillors had better enjoy the brief holiday season, because 1999 promises to be quite a busy year, says Mayor Doug Moffatt. Beginning with council's New Year's Levee on Jan. 1 -- it's sched- uled to be held between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the council chambers to allow the public to meet and greet with their ward representatives -- local councillors should have plenty on their minds and schedules after they ring in the New Year, says the Mayor. Near the top of the agenda will be the controversial Greater Toronto Services Board (GTSB). Mayor Moffatt said just before the Christmas break that he and his council will continue to fight against the new body, which was recently passed into law at Queen's Park. The GTSB will manage municipal services throughout the Greater Toronto Area. fe -------- "\ \LANADIF \ TIRE. / 50 or 20,70 PORT PERRY 985-7341 "We've got a lot of stuff to accom- plish, starting with the GTSB," said the mayor. "I just got the first communication from the GTSB (on Dec. 23) and they want to meet on Jan. 22 to elect a new chair. "It's interesting, now that it's a new law, they're going to take a great step forward. They say they're looking forward to the abil- ity to co-ordinate and integrate services in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area)." While GTSB promoters have assured municipalities that they can opt out of the merger after two years if they don't find it helpful, Mayor Moffatt says it's up to resi- dents of Scugog to give it the final approval. "We're going to need a lot of help from the citizens and others to find the right way to deal with the future," he said. "I'm not going to lead this township to chaos.
