But three of the ele- mentary schools in Scugog exceed the stan- dard, according to a study recently released by the Durham District School Board. The province has set 25 students per class as the target for average class sizes in Durham elementary schools. Cartwright Public School in Blackstock came in with an average class size of 25.38, just over the recommended level. Also on the high side of the provincial benchmark are S.A. Cawker in Port Perry, with 26.68 students per class, and Prince Albert P.S., at 26 students to a class. The figures repre- sent average class sizes in each school. Other schools in the area meet the mark, with Epsom at 23.08, Greenbank at 24.92 and R.H. Cornish at 24.61 students-per-class. Secondary schools in the region are expected to maintain 22 students in an average class. Port Perry High School missed the provincial secondary school class size with 22.36 students per-class, while tiny Cartwright High School in Blackstock has close to the lowest average in the region, with 17.37 stu- dents in a room. Only an alternative secondary school was lower than Cartwright. Overall, Durham's class size averages met the provincial mark, with a regional average of 24.75 elementary and 21.85 secondary class size. Director of Education Grant Yeo told trustees that a building program and renovations planned in Durham schools should bring the board to within provincial stan- dards soon.
