Vol. 133 Number 07 ------ --_-., PORT PERRY, ONTARIO - TUESDAY, JANUARY 5, 1999 COPY 65¢ @ieisecsn 24 Pages SIU releasing few details in shooting of Sunderland man By Chris Hall Port Perry Star An autopsy held last week'in Toronto confirmed that a 44-year- old Sunderland man died of gun- shot wounds during an altercation with police officers on Dec. 28. Gail Scala, a spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit, said yesterday that Tony Romagnuolo died from "at least three" gunshots. "At this time we can confirm he died of gunshots, but we cannot confirm the number," she said. "There are a number of details we cannot release which could effect the integrity of the investigation." The SIU was called to Sideroad 17 west of Hwy. 12 in Brock Township just south of Sunderland, on Dec. 28 after a dispute between the Romagnuolo family and three police officers lead to the death of the man. Four uniformed police officers -- two from Durham and two from York -- arrived at the home around 8 p.m. that night to arrest one of the deceased's three sons. Lorenzo Romagnuolo, 20, was being sought after he allegedly made threats against York Regional officers following a traffic incident involving one of his broth- ers. He was arrested following the incident; he was released on bail following a seven-hour hearing in Newmarket Dec. 31. g It is speculated that either the deceased or a son attempted to grab an officer's gun and the weapon was discharged during the struggle. York Region officer Const. Randy Martin was grazed with a bullet and was treated and released at a local hospital. He suffered a wound to his nose. During the altercation, three officers discharged their 40-calibre semi-automatics, killing Tony Romagnuolo and wounding his 17- year-old son Rocco, the SIU has confirmed. Mrs. Riches later made an offi- cial statement through the board's media office. "1 was informed by teachers on mencement committee that they would not appear on stage or assist BOBBIE DREW in presenting awards to the students if she (Drew) was part of the platform party," the state- ment said.
