Fr 2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 5, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Bus service now on the GO in north Durham By Chris Hall ut Port Perry Star + . The green and white buses of GO Transit greeted Port Pérry commuters Saturday morning as service began in ~ Scugog Township. GO Transit officially introduced. service to North Durham on Jan. 2, when the first bus made its way down Hwy. 12 from Beaverton and rolled into Port Perry B shortly before 10 am. The new routes, says GO Bus Services Director Al Robinson, area welcome addition to the system. - "We're definitely excited to be in the ~ | area. We want to open our service up to | the people in northern Pytham, " he said last week. The bus lines will pi kt up along Hwy. 12 -- including two stops in Port -- before dropping them off at the Whitby rail station, where they can catch connecting trains into Toronto. Passengers can expect to be in down- town Toronto at Union Station from Port Perry in as little as an hour and 20 min- utes, said Mr. Robinson. The cost of a one-way ticket is $7.55. "We're putting a big push on the Port Perry to Whitby rail connection," he said. "We're opening up a few new lines in the new year, and we hope they are all well received." ~ During a meeting with*Scugog coun- cillors last month, Mr. Robinson and two other GO Transit representatives gave local councillc presentation on the new service. At that time, local politicians 4 Port Perry to Whitby service began on Saturday ALL ABOARD... But Mr. Robinson said the service 'cannot accommodate those stops right now. GO officials had proposed to yse Curts St. (just east of Water St. -- behind Tim Horton's) and the intersection of Old "a Simcoe Rd. and Reach St. as pickup spots, but councillors asked them to look at other locations. "We haven't really come to any deci- sions yet but.we have looked at (a stop at) the arena, and there is a possibility it , could work," said Mr. Robinson. wait and see and really study the area. ~ parking lot located on Simcoe St. south of us away from Hwy. 12 and our proposed don't want to see four people using it "It would be difficult for our buses to get in and turn around on certain days, such as Saturday and Sunday with all the hockey going on... it sounds like it gets pretty full there. We don't expect much of a problem at 6 a.m. between Monday and Friday but we'll have to It's a good concept and we are working on it." The other idea put forward by council was for GO Buses to use the commuter Port Perry at Shirley Rd. But that sug- gestion was also dismissed, said Mr. Robinson. "It's too far out of our routing, it takes route. It wouldn't work at this point in time," he said. And Mr. Robinson continues to stress that riders must make good use of the service, or risk losing it. Buses have a capacity of 50 passengers, and he says about half that amount using the service regularly would make for a healthy start in north Durham. "We don't expect a full load, but we either. I have to report back to the board every six months to let them know how the service is progressing," he said. "I'm not going to recommend we cancel it after six months, and I'm not going to stop it if we have '23 people.either. It takes two years to establish a brand, spanking new route, and we'll see how it goes." | REGISTRATION Port Perry High School = Big Brothers/Sisters' - fundraiser coming up INTEREST & FULL CREDIT NIGHT SCHOOL COURSES MONDAY, JANUARY 11, 1999 TUESDAY, JANUARY 12, 1999 Registrations for the following courses will be taken in the main office at the Port Perry High School: Monday, January 11 & Tuesday, January 12.
