18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 19, 1999 -- "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PEEWEES CROWNED: The host Peewee Legionnaires took top spot in their own tournament last weekend after they defeated Brampton by a score of 5-0 in the final game. Here, the local Peewees' JEFF MITCHELL / PORT PERRY STAR squad is in action against a visiting Whitby team, whom they beat 3-1. Other teams competing in the tournament Flamborough, Markham, and Nobleton. included Oshawa, End of the season for Port? After collecting only one point in two games last weekend, the MoJacks are all but mathematically eliminated from the post-season By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Playoff hopes for the Port Perry ModJacks took a severe drubbing as the team could manage just a single point from a pair of Junior C games over the weekend. The ModJacks are three points back of the Little Britain Merchants for the final spot in the Central League post-season action, but the Merchants have two games in hand. And to make a bad situation worse, the MoJacks will be without three key players who are under suspen- sion for their part in a brawl near the end of Sunday's outing with Lakefield, that ended in a 6-5 over- - time win for the Chiefs. Captain Jeff Clarke and newcomer Shane Patrick will each miss the next two games, while Darren Forbes will sit out four. The loss of Clarke and Forbes leaves a big gap along the blue line. Patrick, who just signed on with the team last week, was being counted on for goals as he netted 43 for the ' Bobcaygeon Bullets last season. The game Sunday against Lakefield was just Patrick's second in a MoJack uniform. Last Friday night, the MoJacks travelled to Uxbridge to meet the first place (and slumping) Bruins and they came up with a less than inspired effort going down 4-2 to the Uxbridge team. With five games left to play, two each against the Merchants and Georgina Ice and one with the Bruins, the ModJacks still have a mathemati- cal chance of making the playoffs. But they must win and they will have to count on other teams defeat- ing the Merchants and Georgina. "The guys (players) know this," said a disappointed head coach Tom Thornbury Sunday night after his team squandered a two goal lead in the final minute and then lost in OT to the Chiefs. "But nobody is throwing in the towel," he declared. And even if the team is out of the playoff picture mathematically with a game or two left in the schedule, Thornbury said he expects his team to play those game like they mean something. Coming out of the Lakefield game with just a point was a huge disap- pointment for Thornbury. "They (Chiefs) seemed to steal the momentum at the right time," he said in reference to Lakefield goals with 56 and 22 seconds left in regu- lation to earn the tie and then the winner with 35 ticks left in the five minute OT period. Under Central Jr. C rules, a team gets a single point for a loss in over- time, so the MoJacks now have 29 and are three back of Little Britain, who lost Saturday to Bobcaygeon 7-3 on home ice. The MoJacks are at least five back of Georgina. Leading 5-3 and seemingly very much in control of the contest, the ModJacks somehow went into a tail- spin late in the match with the Chiefs, allowing the visitors to apply all kinds of pressure deep in their zone. Steve Evans made it 5-4 at 19:06 with Chief goalie Ryan Hogan on the bench for an extra attacker. And then at 19:38, still applying the pressure, they pushed the tying goal across the red line. That touched off the multi-player brawl deep in the MoJacks' zone and when the dust had settled Forbes, Clarke, Patrick and Adam Metheral Turn to Page 19 Scores lanes Afternoon Ladies Bowling - Jan. 13 Standings: Thyme 25, 200: Caron Weber 251, 225, 244, Marg Jeffery 207, Marian Geer 238, Wednesday B.J. Gas Bar 2 The first game of the day was the most offensive battle as Van & Truck defeated K.C.I. Gas Bar by a score of 3-2. Van & Truck World got on the board first when Dave Buxcey found the back of the net after taking passes from Brad Menzies and Mark Jobb. K.C.I. Gas Bar tied the game when Tom Barnes came through with an unassisted effort but Van & Truck World answered right back after Greg Fitzgerald set up Brad Coppin to give them the lead. Tying the game once again was K.C.I. Gas Bar as | Trevor Till took passes for Duane Bronson and Tom Barnes. Late in the second frame the game winning goal for Van & Truck World was provided by Brad Menzies as he received a nice pass from Dave Buxcey to give his team a 3-2 win. Ball/Callery & Associates 2 Goreski's Roofing 1 Game two was a defensive battle that went to Ball/Callery & Associates as they prevailed over Goreski's Roofing 2-1. Goreski's Roofing was first to find the cage as Bill Van Camp was able to hit the twine with help from Bob Lee. Ball/Callery took over from there with goals from Steve Connors who was assisted by Brad Hurst, and Paul Stanley who con- nected after taking passes from Bob Tarbotton and Phil McBride to give them two points. Compton Communications 3 Joe's Pizzeria 0 This game went to Compton Communications as they came out on top of Joe's Pizzeria 3-0. Larry Fairman had a solid game between the Compton pipes picking up the shutout. Providing the offence for Compton was Darcy Milligan with a pair of goals, his first from Scott Heard, while his second was set up by Jeff Kroonenburg and Ed Olsen. Peter Somers also found the back of the net with assists going to Todd Wilbur and Scott Wilbur. Taylor/Ford Mercury 2 Pineridge Sports 1 In another goaltender's battle, Taylor/Ford Mercury handed Pineridge Sports the 2-1 defeat. John Moore had a stellar game for Taylor/Ford, while Sean Parker provided many key saves for Pineridge. Taylor/Ford opened the scoring in the first period as Brett Laycoe came through with the help of Rich Bricknell. Taylor/Ford extended their lead to 2-0 when Mark Decosta converted after taking passes from Brett Laycoe and Darryl Workman. Dave Burnett was the only Pineridge player to find the net as he got them within one assisted by Ken Smart Jr. but it would not be enough as it was Taylor/Ford collecting the win. Monsma Electric 3 Harrison Fuels 1 In a low scoring contest, Monsma Electric came out on the better end of a 3-1 decision against Harrison Fuels. Brian TiH led the way for Monsma with a pair of unassisted goals while Mike McQuade netted Monsma's third goal. John Ennis was the only Harrison Fuels goalscorer as he set up Brian Norton and Craig Leask in a losing cause. Taylor Fuels 3 Cedar Creek Contracting 0 In this game it was Taylor Fuels who were victo- rious as they shutout Cedar Creek Contracting by a final score of 3-0. Bill Eade picked the shoutout after Tarn to Page 19
